New Walkway Signage

A long-needed capital improvement to Street Signage throughout the Pines

Dear Karen,

I am thrilled to announce that FIPPOA has begun implementing a significant community-wide capital improvement project — the installation of new boardwalk signs.

Why are we updating walkway signage?

As the current signage aged and, in some cases, deteriorated or vandalized, it became clear that our intersections were not properly marked to ensure easy navigation.

The condition of the walkway signage is also a concern of our local Fire Department, who urged us to find a solution that would help first responders in emergency situations.

In addition to the new four-sided navigational and safety improvements, we also wanted a consistent and attractive aesthetic to identify all our walkway intersections.

How we approached the solution?

FIPPOA board members and staff, working with the Town of Brookhaven Highway Department, took into account a multitude of considerations such as respecting our unique natural surroundings, fulfilling the needs of our first responders, overall public safety, and Department of Transportation standards for sign material and production.

As we researched different design options, we took inspiration from Napa Valley for the post design, incorporating a fantastic detail etched into a solid 6x6 lumber post that will patina over time.

For lighting, we chose a sustainable solution that is not obtrusive to neighboring properties, yet useful as an identifying marker for those conducting emergency assistance or have vision accessibility needs.  We also consulted Dark Sky Association recommendations and Town of Brookhaven ordinances. The lighting will produce a warm white hum to assist community members navigate their way.

What can you expect from this project as you return to the Pines?

Over the next two weeks, we will be installing the new posts, signs, and lighting. The Brookhaven Highway Department will ensure that the intersection posts are installed in the highway right-of-way, avoid interference with utility lines supplying electric and water, and ensure we do not pass onto private property lines.

While Brookhaven is assisting with some of the labor required for installation of the posts, FIPPOA has hired a contractor and is funding all of the material including custom signage and lighting. Last year FIPPOA realized substantial revenues from the FX’s filming of American Horror Stories. The board decided to take a significant portion of those proceeds and reinvest back into the community by funding this project.

I would like to thank FIPPOA board members Chris Mai and Russell Saray for spearheading this project. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to any one of us.
