In This Issue:
New Website, Same Downtown Mission

On June 5th, 2018 Downtown CDC will be launching a new modernized website that allows Pittsburghers to more easily find information about their city. The website is designed with the theme live, work, play in mind and depicts how Pittsburgh has a bit of everything as one of the most livable cities in the nation. The website is the next step in rebranding for the Downtown CDC (formerly the Pittsburgh Downtown Community Development Corporation).

However, the mission is still the same: to serve Downtown Pittsburgh through innovative programs and events that support residential development, assist small businesses, and promote the arts and entertainment. Some upcoming events this summer include the Highmark Italian StrEAT Festival and Pittsburgh Fashion Week. Check out the new website here!

Oakland Based Playhouse Theater is Having One Last Celebration

The Pittsburgh Playhouse Lights Out Celebration will be taking place June 18 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Cassia Crogan, Marketing and PR Coordinator of Point Park University, emphasizes that the event is meant to not only celebrate the Playhouse's success but to also reminisce with its patrons.

"It's everyone's [last] opportunity to come back to someplace that was an important part of their lives," Crogan says. This farewell party will be the final time that the Playhouse opens its doors in Oakland before it moves Downtown to Point Park University.

Because Point Park is a Downtown-based university, the Playhouse will be more accessible for student performers and closer to the academic resources that those performers may need. The New Pittsburgh Playhouse will also be located in the Cultural District, which will further enrich Downtown arts culture and encourage even more visits to the district.

The Playhouse's current Oakland location is comprised of three different buildings that aren't necessarily meant for performances. However, the New Pittsburgh Playhouse building, which will be located along Forbes Avenue, between Smithfield and Wood Street, is specifically constructed to be a performing arts space.

It's bigger, about four stories tall, and has the capacity to house a larger audience. The increased stage space and newer technology also enable the Playhouse to present larger-scale and more complex performances for the audience's enjoyment.

Traditionally, the Playhouse ends its season in May and reopens in the fall. Their final production, Robinhood, ran from May 5 to 20. After the Lights Out Celebration, the Playhouse will reopen at its new Downtown location, a little later than its usual fall reopening.

The Lights Out Celebration includes open mic performances, wine and beer cash, and light snacks and nonalcoholic beverages. Playhouse memorabilia will also be available.

Tickets for the Lights Out Celebration are on sale now. To RSVP for the event, click here .

Where's the Rum? Pirata.

Pirata, located at 274 Forbes Ave., celebrates the cuisine and lore of South America, Puerto Rico and Cuba, not to mention over 200 varieties of rum. The only restaurant that we know of in Downtown Pittsburgh that offers delicious Empanadas and Cubanos!

Their hours are 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Monday through Thursday. Friday and Saturday are 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. (their kitchen closes at 11:00 p.m.) And on Sundays, Pirata is closed.

Designer Spotlight: Lauria Pascuzzi

Lauria Pascuzzi feels that she was born to be a fashion designer- it's runs in her family. Her great-grandmother made her own clothes, as did her grandma. Her mom was always creative when she was younger, sewing and making things. And when Lauria's grandmother passed away, Lauria found old sketchbooks that held all of her fashion designs. It was this that launched her desire to design more fashion of her own.

Lauria is graduating from the Art Institute this June with a degree in fashion design. Her senior collection, titled Mask//d, focused on mental disorders. Lauria studied psychology before studying fashion. Each piece in her collection was inspired by a different mental disorder and taking something that is usually perceived as dark and presenting it in a positive light and into something beautiful. Her first fashion show was in April at the Lupus Foundation in which she received third place. She was honored to be a part of the show because she is personally connected to Lupus through her mom, and was shocked that she even placed. From there, her career continued to snowball and now has a show planned for this summer in addition to the Pittsburgh Fashion Week show in the fall. "I was so excited when I was selected to be a part of the Pittsburgh Fashion Week. Since I just had my first show, I applied really on a whim not expecting anything. The Pittsburgh Fashion show just always seemed so big and so far away. I am still shocked!"

For the Pittsburgh Fashion week, Lauria is introducing her collection 2030. This will be a spring 2019 collection inspired by gender equality and women rights progress and women who are bringing about change in the world. In working with Women's Rising, a subset of the Business in Sustainable Development Commision, Lauria selected several women to base her collection off of including Angela Markle, Melinda Gates, Sheryl Sandberg, Tarana Burke, and Maxine Waters. Select garments in the collection are named after these women. The Sustainable Development Commission has found that when women lead in business there are longer term benefits in the economy, politics and the environment. In combining her designs with her inspirations, Lauria is  embodying the armor that women have to wear daily. "I wanted to do something to incorporate how women are perceived, soft but structured, so I am using lace to make an armor, giving the soft a harder edge, representing struggles women go through daily."
