House Committee Approves Bi-Partisan Amendment Seeking to Prevent Storage of Nuclear Waste on the Great Lakes

At a recent Energy and Commerce Committee markup, Representatives Debbie Dingell (D-MI) and Fred Upton (R-MI) introduced a bipartisan amendment to H.R. 2966, the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2019, which would seek to prevent nuclear waste from being stored near the Great Lakes.
The amendment, which was approved by a voice vote, provides the sense of Congress that the U.S. and Canadian governments should not allow permanent or long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel or other radioactive waste near the Great Lakes. Similar resolutions have been introduced in the past by Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Gary Peters (D-MI), and Congressman Dan Kildee (D-MI).

NEMWI at Work for the Region and You!

As we continue our NEMWI campaign seeking your financial support as a NEMWI contributor, here is another example of one of our successes from 2019 that we hope to continue in 2020 with support from our constituents such as you:

Orientation Offered for Great Lakes Issues and Policy

Building on its long commitment to sound Great Lakes and environmental policy, NEMWI was in the forefront in early 2019 as the new 116h Congress convened, presenting an orientation program on Great Lakes issues and policy that was targeted to introduce new Congressional staff and stakeholders to the Great Lakes.  The program highlighted critical Great Lakes policies and issues, introduced key Congressional and Executive decision-making structures, and presented ways in which NEMWI supports nonpartisan and evidence-based Great Lakes policy-making.
