Great Lakes and Mississippi River Mayors Call for Pandemic Relief

The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative (GLSLCI) and the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative (MRCTI) sent a letter to Congressional leaders last week urging them to find compromise on a COVID-19 package that provides financial relief to cities and towns that have borne the brunt of the impact from the pandemic.

The letter, which can be viewed here, was endorsed by 150 mayors, and emphasizes that the Great Lakes and Mississippi River states are among the hardest hit, with local governments in the region projecting revenue losses up to 80 percent. The GLSLCI and the MRCTI represent large cities and small towns across the political spectrum in the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins.
Organizations Call for Inclusion of Key Great Lakes Provisions in WRDA

Key organizations representing Great Lakes states, tribes, state legislators, municipalities, conservation organizations, labor, business, and ports sent a letter to Congress last week urging it to include essential Great Lakes provisions in the upcoming legislation to reauthorize the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA).

In the letter, which can be viewed here, the coalition of groups calls on Congress to address the following priorities: reauthorize the bipartisan Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI); increase investments in wastewater and stormwater infrastructure; increase resources for the Great Lakes Ports and the Maritime Transportation System; provide assistance in treating and eliminating harmful algal blooms, preventing and eliminating Asian Carp and other Aquatic Invasive Species, and support shoreline protection and resiliency.

Organizations that signed onto the letter include: the Great Lakes Commission, Great Lakes Fishery Commission, Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition, Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority, American Great Lakes Ports Association, Great Lakes Metro Chambers Coalition,  Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Legislative Caucus, and the BlueGreen Alliance.
