The Northeast-Midwest Institute (NEMWI) and the American Manufacturing Communities Collaborative (AMCC) co-hosted a House Manufacturing Caucus Briefing on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, with the Congressional offices of Congressman Tim Ryan (OH) and Congressman Tom Reed (NY) sponsoring the program and offering introductory remarks. Entitled “Bottom-Up: Advancing the Manufacturing Community Model,” the briefing explored the history and expansion of the model, and detailed practical applications and case studies from across the country.
The Manufacturing Community Model is a community-driven public/private partnership with the goal of being able to leverage federal funding to meet national needs with Made in America products. There has been growing demand for these programs in recent years, and Congress has stepped up to the plate with the Regional Technology Hub Program, which has been folded into the America COMPETES Act that is now entering the conference committee stage in Congress.
The briefing highlighted the promise of the years ahead for American manufacturing, and the steps necessary to get there. “We have a great period of opportunity ahead for advancing sound national manufacturing policy and funding,” Dr. Michael Goff, President and CEO of NEMWI said. Speakers at the briefing included Dr. Goff, President and CEO, NEMWI; Matt Bogoshian, Executive Director, AMCC; Andrew Stettner, Senior Fellow, The Century Foundation; Debra Franklin, Wichita State University; Dr. Tulinda Larsen, Utah Advanced Materials Manufacturing Initiative; and Carmen Molina-Rios, State of Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development. Rex Dyer representing the office of Congressman Tim Ryan (OH) and Carter Salwin representing the office of Congressman Tom Reed (NY) opened the program with introductory remarks.
In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the United States-Canada Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael S. Regan and Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault, issued a joint statement highlighting the impacts that the GLWQA has had on improving the health of the Great Lakes.
The GLWQA is a commitment between the United States and Canada to restore and protect the waters of the Great Lakes. The Agreement provides a framework for identifying binational priorities and implementing actions that improve water quality. It was first signed on April 15, 1972, and was amended in 1983 and 1987. In 2012, the Agreement was updated to enhance water quality programs that ensure the “chemical, physical, and biological integrity” of the Great Lakes.
