Smart Great Lakes Initiative and NEMWI
To Co-Host Webinar on January 26

You are invited to a webinar co-hosted by the Smart Great Lakes Initiative and the Northeast-Midwest Institute (NEMWI) on the recently published “Common Strategy for Smart Great Lakes,” on Wednesday, January 26th at 10 AM EST.

The Common Strategy for Smart Great Lakes is a community-generated set of priorities, strategies, and recommendations for advancing data-driven management and policy in the Great Lakes. It supports systems upgrades to out-of-date monitoring and environmental surveillance structures, and combines resources and energy across the region to better direct capacity, funding, and policy toward combating these pressing challenges.

The webinar will lay out some details and present an opportunity to learn more about Smart Great Lakes from invested regional partners, including: 

  • A welcome from Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, MI-12
  • Kelli Paige, CEO of the Great Lakes Observing System
  • J. Val Klump, Associate Dean of the School of Freshwater Sciences at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee
  • Kimberly Neely Du Buclet, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD)
  • Joel Brammeier, CEO of the Alliance for the Great Lakes
  • Matt McKenna, Director of the Great Lakes Washington Program at the Northeast Midwest Institute, Moderator

Organizations Highlight Key Objectives
for New Water Resources Bill

The Northeast-Midwest Institute joined more than 100 conservation and faith-based organizations and businesses in sending key Congressional Committees a letter highlighting various reforms that should be included in a future Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) that Congress is expected to consider this year.

WRDA, which is typically passed by Congress every two years, and was last passed in 2020, authorizes most U.S. Army Corps of Engineer projects and essential water infrastructure activity. Reforms include, but are not limited to: establishing a resilience directorate; redressing environmental injustices; properly accounting for project costs and benefits; employing and properly accounting for voluntary easements; better utilizing federal and state expertise; identifying floodplain reconnection opportunities on federal lands; and advancing disposition of obsolete dams.
