The Northeast-Midwest Institute (NEMWI) will continue the Great Lakes Primer and Orientation Program on June 11th and June 18th with programming focusing on resiliency and climate change issues in the Great Lakes and the impact of harmful algal blooms on the region. The Great Lakes Primer and Orientation Program endeavors to provide key policy education on the most critical issues that directly impact the health of the Great Lakes at the federal level.
These upcoming programs will focus on:
Climate Change and Coastal Resiliency in the Great Lakes (June 11th at Noon EST):
How climate change is impacting the Great Lakes;
Rising water levels and their impacts on the region; and
Local and state efforts to build resiliency in the Great Lakes.
Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in the Great Lakes (June 18th at Noon EST):
The impact of HABs on freshwater systems;
Western Lake Erie’s HABs;
Conservation efforts reducing nutrient pollution.

House Subcommittee To Hold Hearing on Key Water Infrastructure Bills
The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change will hold a legislative hearing on several important bills to address safe and equitable access to drinking water on Tuesday, May 25th at 11:30 a.m. Testifying before the Subcommittee will be Dr. Jennifer McLain, the Director of the Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Office of Ground Water is responsible for implementing the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act. Relevant bills that will be discussed during the hearing include:
