NEMWI Announces Additional Sessions of the Great Lakes Primer and Orientation Program

The Northeast-Midwest Institute (NEMWI) will continue the Great Lakes Primer and Orientation Program on June 11th and June 18th with programing focusing on resiliency and climate change issues in the Great Lakes and on the impact of harmful algal blooms on the region. The Great Lakes Primer and Orientation Program endeavors to provide key policy education on the most critical issues that directly impact the health of the Great Lakes at the federal level.

These upcoming sessions include:

  • Climate Change and Coastal Resiliency in the Great Lakes:
  • How climate change is impacting the Great Lakes;
  • Rising water levels and their impacts on the region; and 
  • Local and state efforts to build resiliency in the Great Lakes.

  • Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in the Great Lakes:
  • The impact of HABs on freshwater systems;
  • Western Lake Erie’s HABs;
  • Conservation efforts reducing nutrient pollution.  

Registration and panelists for the upcoming sessions will be released shortly.

NEMWI Co-Hosts Invasive Carp Webinar

The Northeast-Midwest Institute (NEMWI), along with the Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee (ACRCC), hosted a webinar on the ACRCC’s 2021 Invasive Carp Action Plan on May 11th. The 2021 Action Plan, funded through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) and annual agency appropriations, includes 61 detection, prevention, and control projects. These efforts include coordinated monitoring and early detection, aggressive reduction of invasive carp populations along established fronts, large-scale field trials of potential fish deterrent technologies, and actions to address black and grass carp threats.

The webinar included updates from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
