Canadian Government Pledges $300 Million (USD) Investment for the Great Lakes
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has pledged that his government will spend $420 million CAD (about $306 million USD) over the next decade to restore and rehabilitate the Great Lakes. The funding will seek to address both legacy pollution from industrial activities and newer challenges such as climate change, PFAS chemicals, and microplastics. More specifically, the money will support monitoring, assessment, and restoration work to prevent the release of harmful chemicals and to reduce the frequency of algae blooms.
The proposed infusion of funding will be the largest ever for the Canadian government. Previously, the Canadian Great Lakes Protection Initiative has only allocated a total of $44.84 million USD for Great Lakes protection, which is significantly less than the $3.8 billion USD in funding that the U.S. government has provided the Great Lakes region since 2010 through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI).
In a press release from the Great Lakes & St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said, "representing an international border community on the shoreline of the Great Lakes, I am thrilled to see this kind of cooperation and coordination between the U.S. and Canadian governments to enhance the health of the Great Lakes."
