Senate Agriculture Committee Kicks Off Hearings on New Farm Bill
The U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry met last week to begin the process of developing a new farm bill for 2023. The farm bill authorizes federal agriculture and nutrition programs and is typically authorized every five years. The last farm bill was passed in 2018. The Committee held its first hearing on trade and horticulture titles of the upcoming bill.
Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) emphasized that the Committee has an “important job ahead -- passing the next Farm Bill with strong, bipartisan support.” Ranking Member Senator John Boozman (R-Arkansas) said that this “is an important moment for U.S. agriculture, and [he] believes together we will be able to craft the policy needed to maintain the world’s safest, most abundant, and most affordable food supply while protecting the land, water, air, wildlife, and rural communities that we all care about.” The Committee has announced several other hearings that include:
February 9 – Commodity Programs, Crop Insurance, and Credit
February 16 – Nutrition Programs
March 1 – Conservation and Forestry Programs
NEMWI will continue tracking the farm bill process.
