NOAA Releases Early Western Lake Erie HAB Forecast
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released its first Western Lake Erie Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Early Season Projection last week. The early projection is predicting a bloom that is less severe than the bloom in 2021, and if rainfall in the region remains low, the bloom would likely be smaller than in 2020. The blooms in both 2021 and 2020 were smaller-than-average. NOAA's projection is made through a combination of measurements and forecasts of river discharge and phosphorus loads in the Maumee River from now through July. The full forecast can be found here.
