U.S. and Canada Launch Great Lakes Green Shipping Corridor
In an announcement at the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, or “COP27,” the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Department of State, and Transport Canada announced that they will work with state, provincial, local communities, NGOs, businesses, and indigenous communities to establish a Great Lakes Green Shipping Corridor Network.
According to the U.S. and Canadian embassies, green shipping corridors are key to spurring the early adoption of zero-emission fuels and technologies in the shipping sector to reduce carbon emissions to limit global temperature rise. The proposed Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway System Green Shipping Corridor Network will aim to convene stakeholders and contribute to assessments and analyses relating to alternative fuels and power options within the navigation system.
