President Joe Biden on Friday signed a new continuing resolution (CR) that will keep the federal government funded through February 18, 2022. Under the previous CR, the government would have shut down after December 3rd.
Congress will now continue to work on the annual FY 2022 appropriations bills and will either have to pass the appropriations bills or another short-term measure before the new deadline in order to keep the federal government funded for the remainder of the fiscal year, which ends after September 30th.
The CR that was just signed into law also provides an additional $7 billion to assist Afghan refugees and another $1.6 billion to care for unaccompanied children who crossed the southern border and are in U.S. custody.
New Safe Drinking Water Legislation
Introduced in U.S. House
NEMWI’s Great Lakes Legislative Tracker highlights that this past week, U.S. Representative Ruben Gallego introduced H.R.6088. If signed into law, this bill would amend the Safe Drinking Water Act to authorize grants for smart water infrastructure technology. U.S. Senator Mark Kelly introduced similar legislation in the Senate.
Additionally, U.S. Representative Madeleine Dean introduced H.R.6058. If signed into law, H.R.6058 would extend the authority of the Secretary of Defense to transfer funds for a certain study on per- and polyfluoalkyl substance contamination in drinking water.
The Northeast-Midwest Institute and its Great Lakes Washington Program will continue to monitor the progress of Great Lakes legislation in the months ahead. The Great Lakes Legislative Tracker, updated as of December 3, can be viewedhere.
