Please join the Northeast-Midwest Institute (NEMWI) for the first session of the Great Lakes Primer and Orientation Program tomorrow, Tuesday, May 9th, at 2 pm EDT, via webinar. The webinar will focus on the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). The Great Lakes Primer and Orientation Program is designed to help educate new Congressional staff on critical Great Lakes issues, and is open to all who wish to learn more about the GLRI.
The GLRI has been a critical federal program in improving the environmental and ecological health of the Great Lakes while also growing the region’s economy. Since its inception in 2010, the GLRI has invested approximately $5 billion to support more than 6,850 projects that have accelerated efforts to protect and restore the Great Lakes. This multi-agency program has provided funding to 16 federal organizations to target the biggest threats to the Great Lakes ecosystem strategically and to accelerate progress toward achieving key long-term goals that include restoring critical habitat, improving water quality, eliminating harmful algal blooms, and preventing invasive species from entering the Great Lakes. This federal investment has provided long-term environmental and economic benefits for the Great Lakes states.
The webinar will provide an overview of the GLRI and a snapshot of GLRI success stories. Panelists will discuss the continued need for federal support for the program. Participating organizations will include:
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO)
Great Lakes Commission
Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition
This is the first event in a series of webinars/briefings in the Great Lakes Primer and Orientation. To learn more about future programming, please visit NEMWI’s website here.
NOAA Releases First Forecast on Western Lake Erie HAB
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released the first forecast on the severity of the harmful algal bloom (HAB) in Western Lake Erie, and has predicted that the region will likely see a moderate bloom this summer.
This forecast is comparable to the HAB that was present in Western Lakes Erie last summer. NOAA saw higher levels of phosphorus loading from the Maumee River in March, but saw phosphorus levels drop below average in April, with the trend potentially remaining below average through June. The forecast is focused solely on the size of the bloom and not its toxicity.
