The House and Senate both return to DC this week after the Thanksgiving holiday to address the 2022 fiscal year. Currently the federal government is being funded through a continuing resolution (CR) that is set to expire on Friday, December 3. While it remains likely that Congress will pass another short-term CR to push the funding deadline later into the month, it remains unknown if Congress will be able to negotiate a final appropriations bill/bills for the rest of FY22, which would likely lead to another stopgap into early next year.
Additionally, Congress is also running up to a December 15 deadline to increase/suspend the federal debt ceiling, which is when the Treasury Department could potentially default on the nation's debts.
NEMWI Launches Congressional Retirement Tracker
The Northeast-Midwest Institute has launched an online tracker following Congressional retirements in the Northeast and Midwest regions. The tracker includes the Representative’s or Senator’s name, party, state and whether or not they are running for higher office. The tracker also lists the Congressperson’s committee assignments and leadership positions.
Currently three Senators and eleven Representatives have announced they will not be seeking re-election in the 2022 midterms. Of these, five Representatives have announced campaigns for higher office.
Notable retirements include Senator Patrick Leahy, the President Pro Tempore of the Senate and the longest-serving member in the chamber. Leahy has held his office for almost five decades and is the only Democrat ever to be elected to the Senate from Vermont.
Overall four Representatives and two Senators retiring are members of the Republican Party and seven Representatives and one Senator are members of the Democratic Party. Nine of the Representatives and two of the Senators are from Great Lake states.
