Congress Passes the Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Restoration Reauthorization Act
The U.S. Senate last week unanimously passed H.R. 5973, the Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Restoration Reauthorization Act (GLFWRA). The bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives last April and now has been sent to President Biden, who is expected to sign it into law.
The GLFWRA reauthorizes the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's (FWS) ability to work with states and other agencies to develop and execute proposals to conserve, restore, and manage fish and wildlife populations and their habitats. Since its enactment in the 1990s, GLFWRA has provided federal funding to 148 research and restoration projects throughout the Great Lakes region. It was last reauthorized by Congress in 2016. The new law will authorize the program through 2028.
The GLFWRA's lead sponsors in the House were Representatives Debbie Dingell (D-MI), Darin LaHood (R-IL), Paul Tonko (D-NY), and David Joyce (R-OH), and the lead sponsors of the companion bill in the Senate were Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Rob Portman (R-OH), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), and Todd Young (IN).
