What is Celiac and Why Should I Care?
Did you know that May is Celiac Awareness Month? Celiac is a hereditary autoimmune disease that damages your small intestine after ingesting food with gluten. Gluten are proteins found in wheat, rye, spelt, and barley. Celiac, if untreated early damages your small intestine’s lining and prevents your body from absorbing some nutrients that your body needs.
Symptoms of Celiac Disease
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Weight loss
- Bloating and gas
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Constipation
Symptoms may vary and differ in children and adults.
If you have a family member that has celiac disease, you can also ask your doctor about testing you or someone in the family has a risk for the disease because celiac is a hereditary disease. There is no current cure for celiac disease, but you can manage it by following a strict gluten-free diet. Visit Celiac Disease Foundation to know more about celiac and how to control or manage it.
