Exhibition: Unfadeable Spirit of The People

Columbia artist Cedric Umoja’s Unfadeable Spirit of The People is built upon a personal response to what Umoja views as the “travesty that’s become the norm” regarding unjust treatment and representation of Black people, particularly in this country. Umoja employs a street-style aesthetic and purposefully restricts his pallet to black and white with symbolic use of color so messages project clear and direct.

Umoja will present a Gallery Talk on January 9th at 6:00 p.m. in the gallery followed by a reception.

Composer in Residence: Michael Ching

Described as compelling, provocative, and uplifting, with passages of sheer poetry, Michael Ching is a highly acclaimed and prolific composer, and a noted conductor, who has written works performed by opera companies and orchestras throughout the United States. others. His comic one act opera, Speed Dating Tonight , premiered at the Brevard Music Center’s Janiec Opera Company in 2013. Mr. Ching is the current President of the Douglas Moore Fund for American Opera which provides fellowships for young composers.

Converse Opera Theatre: Speed Dating Tonight!

Premiered in 2013, Speed Dating Tonight! is a one-act comic opera that reflects the real-life quirks of modern dating. Sewn together with 90-second “dates,” each character possesses an eccentric personality that is sure to have you laughing by the end of the night!
