PML: Reinvention in 2022

As 2021 comes to a close, we at PML are reinventing ourselves and our programming (and our newsletter!) to meet the interests of the community we serve.

Wrapping Up 2021

In November, PML launched a series of presentations called the ChangeMaker Series, highlighting people in Maine who are making a difference in their communities. A November presentation with Maulian Dana, ambassador for the Penobscot Nation, hosted more than 170 people from across the state, with an additional 150+ people tuning into the recording of the presentation. In December, Dustin Ward, a racial equity and reconciliation advocate, talked about his work and his perspective, with more than 75 people tuning in.

Looking ahead

PML is eager and ready to welcome 2022 with more diverse, timely, and informative programs. In January, we'll host a 4-part meditation workshop, as well as a presentation on supporting young people as they navigate life's big challenges and three timely presentations offered as part of this year's Camden Conference. We're also excited to launch a reading challenge for avid readers who want something new. This newsletter has all of those details.

The energy continues in February: A learning event about coyotes, a just-for-fun cooking competition, and a comprehensive recycling overview from ecomaine. The ChangeMaker Series conversations will continue in 2022, as will continued efforts to bring even more engaging programs to the community. For now, all of our programs are virtual.

Restructuring our staff

We have restructured our staff to accommodate the community interest in increased library programming:

Kelly Greenlee will be taking on the role of Community Outreach Librarian, coordinating programs and engaging with the community to meet the wide interests of people who live in Cumberland and North Yarmouth. (She is also the new editor of this newsletter).

Jennifer Benham will step into the Youth & Teen Services role. She brings with her a particular interest in teen services and programming.

Diana Fowski (pictured) and Rachel St. Pierre have joined the circulation desk team, and Lea Raven, a GHS student, will join us as a library page, beginning in January.

We thank our wonderful patrons for making the best of an odd year last year. Here's to another year of living and learning together. See you in the stacks!

Moving through the difficult periods of our lives can be transformative if we do so with self-love and compassion. How can we teach these skills to our young people and learn them ourselves? How do we help our young people embrace and celebrate all of who they are? When do we collectively learn to allow ourselves the grace to be flawed human beings?

Susan E. Casey, MSW, MFA is the founder and host of the L.E.A.P. podcast, a platform for struggling young adults to share their painful and transformational stories with peers, educators, and parents. On the L.E.A.P. podcast, Susan has talked with young adults about suicide, sexual assault, self-injurious behaviors, eating disorders, coming out as nonbinary, being bi-racial and gay, and experiencing loss of a sibling and its impact on self and family.

Susan is a licensed mental health clinician, a certified bereavement group facilitator, an author, and a certified life coach. She has worked in hospice, in-patient, and home-based settings with teens and adults, and taught numerous courses to executive leaders and clinicians. She lives in Cumberland with her husband Steve and mini aussiedoodle Rocky.

Introducing a Reading Challenge to Keep You Reading All Year

We're calling this the PML 18:12 Reading Challenge. Consider this an opportunity to discover new genres, topics, and titles. We've compiled a list of 18 reading prompts. Print the list and keep it on your fridge, in your car, in your wallet, or wherever it's handy. We're challenging you to read from the 18 categories before the end of 2022.

Spread the word. Challenge your friends.

Stumped on a category? We've got you covered. We've compiled some reading lists on our website. Use the lists as much or as little as you'd like. Certainly, feel free to sub in your own book ideas.

Facebook users, join the PML 18:12 Facebook Group. See what others are reading, exchange ideas on what to read next, share your progress.

Once your list is done, it's time to brag. Send a picture of your completed list to Kelly at kgreenlee@cumberlandmaine.com. Or bring your list to the library.

LaRose by Louise Erdrich

This is a heart-wrenching story that doesn't waste any time in getting to the meat of the matter. By page 2, Landreaux has accidentally shot and killed his neighbor's 5-year-old son while hunting. Following an ancient Ojibwe tradition, Landreaux and his wife seek retribution by giving their own 5-year-old son LaRose to the grieving family. Readers follow the course of this monumental act, as it affects both families, one which fiercely honors ancient tribal traditions and one that does not. Highly recommend. — Kelly Greenlee
