SAVE THE DATE: Fitness Inspired Gala on
January, 19th

You don't want to miss one of the best nights out of the year!  This is a night to celebrate local people in our own community  transformed through fitness.  We will honor our 2018 "60 Second Inspiration" stories who shared their journey with people all over northeast Michigan.

The event will start at 6pm at the Fletcher Street Depot.  Tickets are $25 and there are appetizers, desserts and a cash bar.  It is a fun night to get dressed up and celebrate!

NOTE: ALL ARE WELCOME. YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A 60 SECOND STORY TO ATTEND. IT'S OPEN TO THE COMMUNITY AND IS VERY INPSIRING.

Reserve your ticket at the front desk or call 989.356.5600. We do HOPE to sell out! HURRY!

The BAC Rewards program has been a hit!  In 2018, hundreds of members earned a BAC Stadium blanket after hitting their 100th workout and a BAC sideline chair after hitting their 200th workout.

In 2019 we have new BAC Rewards that we have been SO EXCITED to announce!  Look for the new gifts to be revealed around our BAC Birthday celebration!

Until then, here is a fun collage of some of our recent BAC Rewards recipients.

With the help of our members, we were able to donate more than $2,000 in toys to Toys for Kids. We heard the program was short this year so we decided to match donations from our members. In less than a week we made this happen.
Thank you BAC family!
BAC teammates spread the joy of fitness with Besser elementary first graders at a field trip earlier this month. Students were able to play fun fitness games, learn about nutrition and discover lots of ways to keep their body moving for a lifetime.

If you would like BAC to help with your community event or field trip use this form to apply.

Shakeology of the Month
BANANA SPLIT SHAKEOLOGY
It tastes like dessert, but acts like a multivitamin!

Why Shakeology?
We all struggle with food prep and getting all the nutrients we need in life every day. Shakeology solves both of those problems.  It literally fills the gaps in our daily nutrition. We still advocate eating clean, colorful, whole foods for your daily meals. Shakeology is a multivitamin in a meal.

It is quick, convenient and filled with vitamins, minerals, superfoods, probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, amino acids, antioxidants and protein. It is NOT a diet shake or a quick fix. It is whole food nutrition.

Need Shakeology at home for YOUR family? FREE shaker cup with purchase!

HEALTHY LIVING RECIPE
by Kelly Lake
Cozy Buddha Bowl In the cold months of the year, a simple warm bowl of healthful ingredients is the best solution for lunch or dinner. The best part of this recipe? You prep the meals ahead of time and warm them up when ready to dig in. Please enjoy!
Ingredients:
-1 cup brown rice
-2 cups water
-3 large sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped
-1 TBSP oil Salt and pepper to toss with potatoes
-Large bunch of kale, quickly sautéed until wilted
-2 cups frozen peas, rinsed
-4 TBSP honey mustard
-2 lbs. baked chicken breast, chopped
-½ cup low sugar dried cranberries
-½ cup chopped, roasted pecans
Method:
Put the chicken and sweet potato in 400 degree oven for 25 minutes, both covered with foil. Place potatoes on a sheet pan and chicken in a glass dish. Cook rice with 2 cups of water for 40 minutes over low heat. Assemble your meals over five containers, diving all ingredients equally. Reheat at low power for two minutes in microwave if desired.

January 2019
Life is better with fitness.
Hap py holidays to our amazing members across northern Michigan and friends of Bay Athletic Club and  around the world! I love hearing from other club owners and trainers who I've met at conferences over the years. Many follow our journey in Alpena and sometimes bring the fun things we are doing (boot camps, rewards programs, 60 Second Stories, galas) back to their neck of the woods. Fitness inspiration is an amazing gift to spread.

What a high-energy year we've had at Bay Athletic Club. The collage below is a celebration of some of my favorite highlights -- from our 10th annual Thinner Winner competition the helped our community lose 1,500 pounds to our popular outdoor adventure boot camps on the beach, to the team of BAC traveling to Chicago and San Diego for continuing education, to our annual Fitness Inspired Gala at the Fletcher Street Depot, to our 12th birthday at BAC. WOW!

My family and I traveled back to my roots in Madison, Wisconsin for Christmas. It's been relaxing with a mix of workouts, family time, catching up on sleep, gift giving, great conversations and simply time together. It's always a reflective time of year for me. I love seeing the impact of fitness on my own family and hope the same for yours.

Jade (15) and Colt (13) have grown up at BAC, from infants to employees. It's fun to see how being in a fitness family, surrounded by positive people, has influenced their lives.

Fitness is so much more than your BMI or the scale. Fitness is a way of thinking, being, acting and achieving. Fitness is believing you are worth caring for. Fitness is knowing that the world is better when you are healthy. Fitness is filling your own cup so you can pour into others. Fitness is adding life to your years and years to your life. Fitness is a non-negotiable, I hope you believe it.

Never let "life" get in the way of staying fit. You need it, deserve it and must protect it. Even if others in your life stray from it or push against it. Hold on tight, my friends. It's yours.

Thank you for trusting BAC and Bay Urban Fitness on your journey. We are more than a business, we are a crusade. We can't wait to tackle 2019 with you.

PS - Check out the excitement right now! Treasure Your Health is BACK! Bring a friend or family member to BAC. They will transform their lives AND get a fun gift to start!

Did you see the 20 new spin bikes on their way to Bay Urban?
If you haven't been an indoor cyclist with us yet, 2019 is your year. Details below and some new classes to come.

Sincerely,
Trina Gray

TIPS FROM NUTRITION EDUCATOR AMANDA FREELAND

NUTRITION TIP:
Start your year by setting yourself up for success by setting good intentions and simple goals.  Too many times we over-complicate and that derails us.  When it comes to nutrition, simple is always better.  When we try to make drastic changes the overwhelm can be too much.  Remember, there is no need to cut out food groups, place restrictions on yourself or massively cut calories.  You just need to make small, healthy tweaks and stick with them.  Here are some examples of simple goals that may be perfect for you!
  • Ensure your nutrition is filled with nutrients and fiber by eating fruits and vegetables.
  • Eat protein at each meal to keep you full.  The less red meat the better, choose chicken and fish more often.
  • Drink at least half of your body weight (in ounces) of water a day.  If that seems like a lot, even 8oz more than you are currently doing will make a difference.  Start there.
  • Plan your treats for the week.  Choose 1 or 2 days a week to enjoy a treat.
  • Switch to whole grain bread products and limit highly processed white bread products.
Stay excited about these changes and believe you can do it, because when you approach these tweaks positively you'll keep doing them and get results.  For example, instead of saying, "I won't eat white bread," say, "I am going to focus on eating all whole wheat and whole grain bread products."  Set yourself up for even more success by writing down your goals and sharing them with at least one person in your life.

FOOD SWAP:
Sugar is one of the most addictive food substances and it also adds extra calories to our day and extra weight to our body.  Many beverages have a lot more sugar than you might think.  Women should have no more than 26 grams of added sugar in a day and men no more than 36 grams (according to the American Heart Association), but many bottled teas have 36 to 48 grams of added sugar.  Try trading out your sweetened teas and sodas for carbonated water.  This will cut calories and sugar.  Two flavors I love are Cherry Lime La Croix and Black Cherry by Schwepps.

SUCCESS STORY:
Chris Spencer has been so excited to see the scale go down this fall.  He has lost 12 pounds since beginning nutrition sessions with me this November.  Chris has been tracking his food and made positive changes to his eating habits.  He packs his own lunch everyday and has more knowledge about food.  He is feeling happy and successful!

TAKE ACTION OVER YOUR NUTRITION:
We offer two great nutrition services at Bay Athletic Club.
1) A three pack of personal coaching nutrition sessions
2) Turning Point: A six week comprehensive nutrition program to develop better habits and a better relationship with food
