New Year, New Opportunities, New Challenges: Notes in Transition

I began the year preaching at Third Creek Presbyterian Church, now in transition, as are a number of our congregations, and as our presbytery itself is. Since it was still Christmastide, I felt as if we still had one foot in that season; since it's now January, I felt we were looking ahead. I went with Epiphany, God's revelation to the Gentiles, which we see in the visit of the Magi, and where God is leading us next. Just as the Magi are directed to go another way, so are we if we set ourselves on the path following Jesus Christ.

Leaders in Salem Presbytery continue to work together to pursue the vision set before us. Our new Stewardship Committee continues to think about how we share the stories of successes in our ministries with which we can encourage one another (only today I heard exciting early reports on results the seventeen congregations that took part in our "Creating a Culture of Generosity" workshops have been experiencing, good enough to merit a repeat).

You may have seen that General Assembly leaders are inviting us to pray for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) for 180 days before our national governing body gathers in Baltimore in June. Likewise, I invite you, personally and in your congregations, to pray for Salem Presbytery and for its leaders during this time of transition. Pray for the Implementation Team as they consider how to make our vision a reality. Pray for our stewardship team. Pray for us to see and seize opportunities to engage in transformational ministry that will change our churches and change us too. Pray for our staff - including me.

I would also like to encourage you, if you are not already serving through Salem Presbytery, to make yourself available for this ministry we share. Over the nearly twenty-two years I have been a member, I have enjoyed both the work and the colleagues these ministries have afforded me. Friendships in our presbytery are important to me, and they have helped sustain me through many seasons.

If you have accepted a role of service or leadership in our presbytery - or both - let me thank you. I encourage you to take a breath, and get ready to dare new things as we traverse the road together, following Jesus Christ into this new year and beyond.

Grace and peace!

Pennies for Hunger Plea

Over the last thirty years, churches across Salem Presbytery have collected change once a month to share with our siblings in Christ who are suffering from hunger. Through this Pennies for Hunger ministry we have distributed more than three million dollars in food aid! But sadly, the need isn't going away.

In 2019, the Domestic Hunger Committee received applications from 17 agencies within our Presbytery seeking financial assistance for their feeding programs. Though we were happy to award each agency a grant, we could only fulfill 60% of their funding requests. As 2020 begins, we challenge all congregations to step up their contributions to Pennies for Hunger. Scrounge in couch cushions! Pick up change on the street! Start an "oopsy" jar! Whatever it takes, you all are our partners in empowering agencies across the Presbytery to fulfill Jesus' call to feed His sheep, and we hope that when our Spring grant cycle rolls around, we can award every grantee 100% of the funding they need to serve the most vulnerable in our communities.

Agencies we supplemented in 2019 include:
  • Allied Churches of Alamance County, Inc.
  • Andrews Snack Packs (Andrews Elementary School)
  • Blowing Rock CARES Food Pantry
  • Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission, Inc.
  • Caswell County Parish
  • Concord Presbyterian Church Food Pantry
  • Crisis Control Ministry Food Pantries
  • Hot Dish and Hop
  • Iredell Christian Ministries, Inc.
  • Meals on Wheels of Rowan, Inc.
  • Out of the Garden Project/Urban Farm
  • Pastor's Pantry (Targeting Senior Hunger)
  • Pleasant Grove Elementary Food Backpack program at Cross Roads
  • Samaritan Kitchen of Wilkes
  • Wilkes Ministry of Hope
  • Yokefellow Cooperative Ministry (Mt. Airy)
  • Yokefellow Ministry of Greater Statesville
Salem Online Resources

Take advantage of this handy resource, to which you have access through the Salem Presbytery website. As our staff grows smaller, and as fewer are available to answer the phone, you will find this directory easier to use (password = clemmons3950) than calling the presbytery to get phone numbers and email addresses of committee members or others you want to be in touch with. If using a list you received an email that bounces back, check the directory.
