STEM Innovation Leadership Academy 2020:
Applications Now Open!
|

|
In case you haven't heard,
applications for this summer's STEM Innovation Leadership Academies are now open.
The STEM Academy is available to young women currently in 10th or 11th grade and interested in STEM, sustainability, and energy in the Exelon service territories of Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington D.C. During these free, week-long Academies,
young women learn about the energy industry in fun and interactive ways, including field trips, hands on activities, small group discussions with women leaders from across the region, leadership development training, and an energy challenge with some great prizes for winning projects! See the links below for more info on how to apply to an Academy in your region.
Applications are due on April 22nd.
(Please note - past Academy participants are not eligible to apply, but are always welcome at our STEM Days.)

STEM Day at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia
|
|
On January 11, students and Exelon/PECO employees came together for a fun day full of STEM at The Franklin Institute. Activities included 3D modeling and printing in a Tech Studio, a hydrogen workshop, and a live demonstration from a science interpreter. Employees and students had a chance to work together and network throughout the day, as well as explore the rest of the Institute on their own after the event.

STEM Star of the Month - Tiera Fletcher
|
|
This month's featured STEM star is
Tiera Fletcher, a Structural Engineer with Boeing. Her job involves designing rockets that explore outer space, with the goal of someday having one of those rockets take people to Mars. Growing up near Atlanta, GA, her love for math began at age 6, and she attended a STEM program in her elementary school where she learned about aerospace engineering.

Internships - check out some of these neat opportunities!
Internships are a great way to gain experience and expand your skill sets so that you're ready for that first job. While we aren't specifically endorsing or in contact with some of the organizations listed below, we thought these might be cool opportunities for you to read more about!
The
University of Illinois at Chicago CHANCE STEM Academy
is a five-week academically intensive Engineering program offered during the Summer. There are two tracks for the program: Computer Science and Engineering. For priority consideration, apply by January 31, 2020.
In Baltimore,
The National Aquarium Youth Exhibit Guide Program gives local high school students the opportunity to spend a summer volunteering with staff in their exhibits, with unique opportunities to learn more about marine biology and STEM careers. Applications are due by January 31, 2020.
Bank of America Student Leaders Program connects more than 300 community-minded high school juniors and seniors from nearly 100 communities to employment, skills development and service. Students are awarded paid summer internships with local nonprofits such as Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Habitat for Humanity and participate in a national leadership summit in Washington, D.C. Applications due by January 31, 2020.

Philadelphia. Activities to include tours of the Fabrication and Comcast labs, and a panel discussion with young women in Comcast's CORE Rotational Program.
