[MANUSCRIPT] [PHARMACEUTICAL] Codex de Rebus Pharmaceuticis 1787 Minister of love - Vade Mecem. N.p. France or Belgium. 16 x 11 cm. 32 pages, 27 utilized for recipes/remedies. Love potions, ointments, alcohols, savory recipes, and birth control. Unique French pharmaceutical manuscript containing more than 80 recipes for such aphrodisiacs as "Parfait Amour," "Huile de Venus", hair pomade, rouge, toothpaste, biscuits, lip gloss, shaving cream and less saucy entries for hemorrhoids, "Gelée Pour les Vers," "Injection anti venerienne," diuretic water and macaroni. "Sirop purgatif pout les Enfants," seems to suggest some sort of birth control. A recipes for "Elixirium Doctoris Jernae Vulgo de Longue Vie" suggests a youth serum. Recipes utilize topical, edible, and medicinal and make use of eau de vie, absinthe, lavender sugar and spices such as cinnamon. A smattering of international names include: "Aromatica Wirtemergica," "Liquor Tingens Domini Meyer," "Serum Lactis domini Weiss". Written partially in Latin using roman lettering for titles, with symbols referencing other sections within the text. Repurposed binding, legal in nature, concerning a deceased woman named Catherine (surname illegible), possibly early 17th-century. Vellum binding made from an earlier French legal manuscript with remnant of tie, edges speckled red. $4,750.00

Part of the 33rd Infantry Regiment in 1950, the Regiment was the U.S. Army's only Jungle Warfare Training Center at the time - later designated as the 20th Infantry in 1956. Filled (literally - very big) with recipes from the wives, officers, and even Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower. Other "special" contributors: Senora Olga Arias De Arias - Presidentia, Panama, R. P., Mrs. Wilber W. Brucker - Wife of the Secretary of the Army, Mrs. Maxwell D. Taylor - Wife of Chief of Staff of U.S. Army, as well as many other high ranking army and air command personnel. Program for the Brooklyn Heights Seminary Club performed at The Brooklyn Academy of Music, April 28, 1911. Featured in the program are the daughters of the social elite including: Eunice Beecher (granddaughter of Henry Ward Beecher), and members of the Van Brunt, Cropsey, Ditmas, Loomis, Peabody, Pratt, and Scudder families. The Club was located at 18 Pierrepont Street and members were made up of the Senior Department of Brooklyn Heights Seminary with the expiration of their membership two years after leaving the Seminary. A Compilation of Reliable Recipes with a Casual Culinary Chat. Indianapolis/ New York: Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1936. 638 pages. First Trade edition. Signed on front free end paper, "Cordially yours Irma S. Rombauer". After the suicide of her husband in 1930, Irma Rombauer cobbled together a cookbook, illustrated by her daughter Marion. By 1936 the Bobbs-Merrill Company agreed to publish the expanded version, keeping the narrative style later known as the "action method", in which ingredients are called for within the recipe. Expertly rebacked, boards rubbed and mildly stained, interior lightly toned with some stains. Yellow diagonal patterned boards. Good. Hardcover. $2,250.00

Hevia, Enrique. Formulario de Cocktelería Publicado Por La Sección De Propaganda De Destilerías Van Den Bergh & C. S. Antwerp, c. 1920. 87 pages. 11 x 8 cm. Promotional cocktail recipe book utilizing "La Campana" liquors. The Van den Bergh distillery was one of the biggest Antwerp in the late 19th century. Also present in this copy is the product Freixenet (cava) which they started selling in 1914. Interestingly, the Freixenet company is run today by one Enrique Hevia. The author may likely have been this gentleman's grandfather. Cocktail scholars speculate the book was published in Spain by Hevia to promote the products of La Campana. Illustrated throughout. Some foxing and damp stains. $575.00
