Happy New Year
 from the Baytown Tourism Team!
Meet our newest Tourism team member, Marisa Jennings! She joined us in October filling the role as Visitor Outreach Specialist. We are thrilled to have her round out our Tourism trio! Marisa brings a wealth of experience working with volunteer groups, planning events, and managing projects. She jumped in with both feet and has done a great job getting our new volunteer program underway. Marisa is always excited to meet new faces and make new connections in the community!

Check out our New Digs!
We are now moved into our first Visitor Information Center after a wonderful Grand Re-opening on August 23rd! The Information Center is located in a 1949 renovated theater, called the Brunson. This “old theater” is near and dear to many people who live in the Baytown community and we are incredibly honored to have the opportunity to breathe new life into it. The Information Center serves locals and visitors with up-to-date information pertaining to events, activities, attractions, and hotels in Baytown, including all of our great places to eat! The next time you are in our area, swing by and see us at 311 West Texas Avenue, in the Downtown Arts District!

The Brunson's Grand Re-opening was Magical!
The Brunson Theater's Grand Re-opening took place on, what would have been, the 70th anniversary of the theater. It was an evening filled with happiness, warm smiles, and reminiscing!

Once the ribbon was cut, the doors were opened and crowds of enthusiastic guests flowed into the Brunson to celebrate, "Good Ole Days Gone By!" Everyone who came was able to get a first look into the renovated building and enjoy savory bites and music.

The highlight of the evening took place in Town Square. The premier of "When the Lights Went Down" began at sun set. The documentary highlights the nostalgic, fun, and quirky history of the Brunson Theater, starring many local celebrities. Guests enjoyed sweet treats while they heard a few words from the film's crew and viewed the film.
Note: Visitors are able to see the film playing in the lobby of the Visitor Information Center every Thursday and Friday at noon, or by appointment.
New Year, New You
Three Ways to De-stress
 by Marisa Jennings

It’s a Happy New Year in Baytown! The city is just brimming with possibilities! Being new to the Baytown community I set out to discover all the most popular fishing spots, fun attractions, tasty eateries, adventures, art, and hospitable hotels, finding a restorative sense of relaxation right here!

The water is reflecting wonders of creation and the cool air is breezing invitations of unexplored joys in nature. Of course, the best part of discovering new places is always the very nice people that you meet. On my journey, I realized that there is a whole new ME ready to explore new ways and places to relax on a regular basis, right here in Baytown.

Most people think about resolutions to lose weight, start a new diet, quit smoking, etc. I am however, focused on de-stressing! This can be free of charge or very inexpensive for the most part. I found Baytown has an extensive list of places you can visit, much too long to list here; however, here are a few places you might visit to begin your journey towards the NEW YOU. I did!
A Delightful Dining Discovery!
Featuring: Sabor of Mexico
by Marisa Jennings
In my recent Baytown adventures, I discovered many great places to eat. As a healthy minded eater; occasionally vegan, it can be challenging. Finding new places to eat can be perplexing when you are trying to shift toward a healthier diet.

HOLA Sabor of Mexico!

Everyone loves Mexican cuisine and skipping on flavor is unacceptable. At Sabor of Mexico, I enjoyed healthy and authentic deliciousness all in one. You will be pleasantly surprised what is on the menu! It includes very delicious Mexican dishes such as their tortas, tostadas, nachos and soups. The same deliciousness is carried over in their meatless versions as well.

After my conversations with the owners, I discovered Vegans and Vegetarians come from everywhere to dine here for the flavor and freshness.
Featured here is a vegetarian plate at Sabor of Mexico, located at 208 W. Texas Ave
Sabor of Mexico also serves delicious fresh smoothies, infused water and juices made before your eyes for breakfast, lunch or supper. Dessert for that particular little sweet tooth will serve you up a healthier dose of indulgence with some homemade Mexican ice cream or popsicles. The WHOLE family can start a fresh new year toward a whole new you!
Let's Count Birds!
Did you know that there are over 300 species of birds that call Baytown home? The Houston Audubon Society, in partnership with the Baytown Nature Center, is leading a monthly bird count at the Baytown Nature Center every 3rd Thursday each month. Free for all bird lovers and no experience needed! Just have fun counting birds!

The Culture of Tea
There is an American nursery rhyme that most of us learned in grade school called, "I am a little teapot." This little teapot sits opposite the little tea cup. In many cultures sipping hot tea is a way of profoundly connecting with one another.

If you are a hot tea lover, you will appreciate this event! The Art League of Baytown is celebrating National Hot Tea Month, January 11-31, 2020 at the gallery. You can visit anytime during gallery hours; however, there is Afternoon Tea worth steeping over on the 25th!

10 th Annual Jail Break Run
Saturday, February 29
Photo shows runners returning from the top of the Fred Hartman Bridge.
It’s a brisk February morning and the sky is transitioning from charcoal to cobalt. I stand anxiously in the midst of hundreds of runners who have trained months to be at this half marathon starting line awaiting the shotgun signal that will initiate the 13.1 mile trek through suburban pavements. I yearn for my finisher’s medal and the incredible view from the top of the Fred Hartman Bridge that awaits me at mile 9; but what overshadows everything, is that I am running for a worthy cause.

This is the sentiment felt by runners who participate in Baytown’s Jail Break Run Half Marathon and 5K each year in February.
