Broom House Farm Newsletter
January 2018

Hello everybody,
A Happy New Year to you all - we are hoping for lots of sunny blue sky days up at Broom House Farm in 2018. The year has started with a week of relentless grey coldness and everywhere seems so muddy. The dogs still need a walk though, and once you're out and about things seem a lot better...and a lot warmer! Here and there bulbs are poking their green shoots through the soil and soon the days will start to feel longer. The Forest Adventure is closed until the Spring, we're using this time to create new activities and quizzes and the Farm Shop and Coffee Shop are buzzing. It's been great to have your feedback on how delicious your Christmas turkeys and beef etc have been, we look forward to seeing you all again soon...look out for the new party room!
This is a real working farm, there are always hens, goats, ducks and pigs on view, as well as the turkey; and for the next few months there'll be sheep in the polytunnels. Book a visit for your schoo l and look out for details about our charity lambing open days at Easter, we'll be raising money for Old Dunelmian John Gillette's Zambezi Sunrise Trust,
browse our range of gifts in the Farm Shop, as well as foodie gifts, ceramics and textiles we have locally made cards, candles, chocolate and soaps.
Broom House Farm - a great spot for winter walks and watercolour workshops. Bring your dog and get out for some fresh air and great views on the farm's footpaths or try something new and join Jenny this week (17th-19th January) for lunch and a morning experimenting with gorgeous watercolours

Every fortnight we bring in the remaining 2017 lambs for weighing and sorting up, any that are around 40kg and well fleshed are marked with a spray dot on their back; when we have 50 or more lambs ready we'll arrange a collection slot and they'll be sold on a deadweight basis.
The early lambing ewes have been housed and scanned and the main flock ewes are gradually being housed as they are walked back to Broom House for scanning this week. The first family was scanned on Friday and as usual we didn't get a great percentage. The aim now will be to have a really good lambing - and good news here, as we have a super sounding lambing team in place for this year. It's all go on the sheep front as we'll be shearing next week.
Most of the in-calf cows are still plodging around outside, in the fields that have some hard standing, the first calves are due in about 8 weeks. Aberdeen Angus cattle are quite happy outside all year round, but it's easier to have them inside for calving, and most of the pasture on this farm is unsuitable for supporting cattle in the winter months; their hooves cut up the wet soil and leave the fields rutted and muddy. Martin's been getting their sheds ready, feeding and checking his girls every day, the in calf cows just need a diet of grass and clover silage, however the youngstock's ration is supplemented with the higher protein oat/pea silage mix, the big red feeder bedder wagon is used to take this down the road to the yard at Langley House
