AAUW Alumna

Claudine Gay

Named President of Harvard

Claudine Gay, AAUW American Fellow (2003-04), will soon become the 30th president of Harvard University! The Wilbur A. Cowett Professor of Government and African American Studies, and founding chair of Harvard's Inequality in America initiative, Gay is the first woman and first African American named dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science at Harvard. She will become Harvard's president in July!

The AAUW American Fellowship program began in 1888 and is designed to support women scholars who are pursuing full-time study to complete dissertations, conducting postdoctoral research full time, or preparing research for publication for eight consecutive weeks. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of scholarly excellence; quality and originality of project design, and active commitment to helping women and girls through service in their communities, professions, or fields of research. AAUW chose well!

Pregnant Workers Fairness Act Passes Senate and House

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA), a bill that requires reasonable workplace accommodations to allow millions of pregnant workers to safely stay on the job, has become law after 10 years of advocacy.

Working alongside other organizations, AAUW advocacy has taken the form of countless letters to elected officials, in-person meetings with policymakers, a rally at the U.S. Capitol, social media posts, and more. The PWFA:

  • gives pregnant workers access to basic accommodations like carrying a water bottle and taking bathroom breaks
  • makes it illegal to discriminate against pregnant workers by forcing them out of their jobs unnecessarily or denying them reasonable accommodations
  • prohibits employers from retaliating against pregnant workers who request accommodations
