Improved Crosswalks, Flashing Beacons Planned for Two Locations

With the completion of the N. Wiget Lane repaving and bicycle lane installation project, up next is a city project to improve, refresh, and enhance two existing crosswalks in Shadelands: one on Shadelands Drive in front of Viamonte Walnut Creek, and one on Mitchell Drive in front of Shadelands Post Acute and Contra Costa School of Performing Arts.

Demolition Has Begun on Former Site of

Joint Genome Institute

The Joint Genome Institute (JGI), one of the world's leading contributors of genetic blueprints, moved into Shadelands in 1997, and became part of the largest biological research endeavors ever undertaken—mapping the human genome. In 2019, to be closer to its industry family and associates, JGI moved to Berkeley, leaving 56,000 square feet of laboratory and office space at 2800 Mitchell Drive vacant. Work is now underway to demolish the structures and clear away debris to prepare the nine-acre parcel for a buyer and fresh, new development.

City of Walnut Creek Selects New Mayor, Mayor Pro Tem

At the December 3, 2024, meeting of the Walnut City Council, council members adopted a resolution certifying the results of the November 5, 2024, elections, and selected a new mayor and mayor pro tem. Councilmember Cindy Darling was chosen to serve as mayor for the next year, and Councilmember Kevin Wilk was chosen to serve as mayor pro tem. Mayor Darling and Mayor Pro Tem Wilk, along with newly elected Councilmember Craig DeVinney, joined fellow council members Matt Francois and Cindy Silva at the dais ready to get to work.
