A MESSAGE FROM

REBECCA BACON,

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Community Partners,

As we welcome in the new year, many of us refocus on our health. Often, we make resolutions to prioritize our physical health, resetting our diet and renewing our exercise goals.  Let’s also remember to pay attention to our emotional health, especially for those of us who are parents or caregivers. Effects of our stress can easily trickle down to our children.

When on an airplane, we are instructed to put on our oxygen masks first before assisting others in an emergency. This enables you to remain calm and composed, allowing you to think and act rationally. The same advice applies to parenting. To positively impact our children’s mental health, we need to first make use of the tools that support our emotional well-being.  If parents and caregivers can build resilience, strengthen social connections, cope with stress, and practice mindfulness, we are better positioned to care for our children’s emotional needs and healthy development.

Many Children’s Board funded programs aim to positively impact outcomes for parents and caregivers by targeting activities that increase social supports, reduce symptoms of depression, decrease stress, and improve family wellbeing. Examples of family support programs that address these areas include Healthy Families, Caregiver Support Services, Kinship Care, Pathways to Hope, A Path to Prevention, First Hug, La Red de Padres Activos / Network of Active Parents, and the Woven Empowerment Program. Additionally, programs such as HOT DOCS, The Incredible Years, Healthy Steps, and Baby Bungalow help parents increase knowledge and add strategies to their parenting toolkit.

The programs listed are just a few examples of how the Children’s Board invests in partnerships and quality programs to support the success of all children and families in Hillsborough County. We continue to add to the array of services and will soon release the 2025 Family Guide.

Wishing you a healthy and happy New Year!

Rebecca
