A message from Rev. Eric Heidecker
There is a long stretch of 'green' time, that falls between Advent/Christmastide and Lent/Eastertide, and then another stretch after The Great Fifty Days of Easter, until Advent pops up and the cycle repeats. The 'green' comes from the liturgical color used for these times. It's also commonly referred to as 'Ordinary Time'. But I'm learning that things never get too 'ordinary' here at St. Catherine's!

In this fast approaching stretch of Ordinary Time, I think you'll find renewed vigor in our weekly parish offerings. On Thursdays, we're revamping our 10:30 Healing Service, to have a focus on each of us as as a minister of healing. This involves some being eucharistic visitors, nursing home visitors, long term caregivers at their own home, or those who just feel a quiet call to prayer for those in need. The service will have less focus on Bible learning, and more time spent in supportive discussion and prayer. We'll also be exploring ways to make fuller use of the wonderfully up-to-date gift of our parish prayer list.

Then after the Healing Service, and separate from it, there's a parish Bible Study at 11:30. If you haven't been to one of these lately, you may be surprised at the wonderful depth of discussion that occurs as we reflect on Scripture alongside our own life experiences. This is a delightful opportunity for Spiritual growth that anyone is welcome to drop in on. Give it a try!

As we move into Ordinary Time, there will be yet another Thursday opportunity, this time from the diocese, that St. Catherine's has chosen to participate in. Sacred Ground is a free hybrid (online and in-person) course, with readings, short movies, discussion, and individual prayer. It focuses on race and racism in a challenging and engaging way. It will be January 12 to March 2 on Thursday evenings from 6:30-8:00 p.m. You can watch the presentations and join in the discussion at church, or watch from home and join in discussion online with a dispersed group from around the diocese. To learn more about this exciting opportunity, and to register, see the flyer in the church entryway or contact the church office. 

We will also be exploring other educational opportunities for the parish. But don't leave me to do it alone -- you never know what you'll end up with! That's why I'm asking folks who are interested in this type of ministry to join me in a new Education Committee, to plan and facilitate all kinds of learning opportunities for the parish. Just let me know if you feel a call to this ministry tugging at your heart.

Another ministry opportunity that may be calling some of you, is planning social activities for the parish. Taking trust and friendship to new levels, simply by spending fun times together, will benefit our parish and grow some surprising fruit. Let LaJuana know if this ministry is tugging your heartstrings. There will also be an element of fundraising as part of this ministry, as we look to an uncertain, but exciting, future.

Meet Vestry Candidate Beth Osborne

A cradle Episcopalian and 15-year member of St. Catherine’s, Beth Osborne has served in many capacities including leading Godly Play for children, coordinating the annual Christmas Pageant (until the last two years), and serving on the Vestry (Senior Warden for the last year of the 3-year term). In addition, she has been involved in our music program, picking out weekly hymns with Rev Laurie and Kevin, and serving as song leader for the early, more contemporary service. When COVID struck, she helped develop our online service and weekly Powerpoint. Most recently, Beth has been a member of the committee researching more affordable places for us to worship. You can find her most Sundays flipping between Tech leader, choir, and lay reader!
 
During the week, Beth manages the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada one-to-one mentoring program, putting her faith into action by serving low-income members of our community and striving to help at-risk children realize their full potential. Beth has always felt drawn to our incredibly generous parishioners and the incredible outreach that is the core of St. Catherine’s. Having ended a 9-year stint on the Board of Galilee Episcopal Camp and Retreat Center, and looking to retire from her full-time job in March, Beth feels able to commit more time to helping our St. Catherine’s parish work together to figure out our next stage.

Our Annual Meeting and Potluck will be held after services on January 22. We will hear about the year-end finances, the budget for 2023, our many outreach projects and other ministries, plus we will elect new Vestry members and convention delegates. Please mark that date on your calendar to attend.
Daughters of the King
Consider joining Daughters of the King

The Daughters Chapter of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral will offer a Discernment Class in late January 2023. Would you like to know more?

The Order of the Daughters of the King includes women and girls between the ages of seven and 107 who desire a closer walk with the Lord. We are Christian women, both lay and ordained, who are strengthened through the discipline of a Rule of Life and supported through the companionship of our sisters. 

Discerning women go through a three-month study period which helps them to determine if they are called to be a Daughter. Our Chapter will be offering a new Discernment Class beginning in late January 2023. It will be an online class offered through the Diocese of Los Angeles.

How to donate to St. Catherine’s from your IRA’s Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)

For those who must take a distribution from their IRA every year, a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), there is a way to donate some of that taxable money to St. Catherine’s, which will also reduce the taxable income you would normally have to put on your tax return. 
 
St. Catherine’s is a non-profit, 501(c)3 church recognized by the IRS.  One can donate from an RMD up to $100,000 to a non-profit, tax-free, if you have the IRA custodian make out the check to the non-profit organization. The amount of a donation to a non-profit from an RMD can be subtracted from the total amount of the RMD to equal your new taxable income.  

One needs to contact the custodian that holds your IRA with your request, usually at least a month ahead of the RMD deadline. In the letter to your custodian, cite your account number, the amount of the RMD you wish the custodian to direct to St. Catherine’s, along with our name and contact information plus our federal tax number (see below).  To make this work, you must have the IRA custodian make out the check to the non-profit.  If you take out the money and donate it yourself, you will not get the taxable income benefit.

Thanks for supporting local families

Thank you to everyone who participated in our "St. Nick's Helpers" ministry this year, with Smithridge Elementary School in south Reno. 

Together we provided more than 40 gifts for the five families that needed some help with Christmas. 

The gifts were delivered to the school on Dec. 19th, with many thanks from the counseling staff there. Thank you again for your generous donations.

Sacred Ground series begins Jan. 12

The Episcopal Church's "Sacred Ground" program is a film-based dialogue series on race and faith.

Small groups are invited to walk through chapters of America’s history via a curriculum of documentary films and readings that focus on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories as they intersect with European American histories.
