January 2015 - Q1
It is that time of year...when everyone sets new year's resolutions! It is important to set them not only in your personal life, but also in business! Every business, regardless of the size, should have clearly set and articulated goals. In this newsletter we are going to show you how to apply the principles of SMART goal setting.

What are SMART Goals?

SMART is an acronym for the five steps of specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based goals. It is important for businesses to set goals that lead to results.

SPECIFIC- your goals need to be well defined and focused. Don't just say "my goal for 2015 is to gain more business". Be specific! How about "gain two new clients per month in the Ontario food & beverage manufacturing industry". Being specific and focused will make your goal clear and therefore more achievable.

MEASURABLE - ensure your goals are measurable. Imagine a hockey game without a scorekeeper! Put numbers in all goals to keep you on track and focused on the targeted results you want to attain.

ATTAINABLE - Rome was not built overnight! It is important to dream big, but ensure you are realistic with your goals. If you don't have the time, money or talent to attain your goal, you most definitely will fail. A good idea is to do research and check industry associations to get a handle on realistic growth in your industry.

RELEVANT - decide if reaching your goal is relevant to you. If you say you want to gain two new clients a month, think about whether you and your team have the bandwidth to do this. If you determine you don't have the bandwidth, ask yourself if you want to grow your team. If the answer is no, you need to tweak your goal. Ask yourself why do I want to reach this goal? What is the objective behind this goal?

TIME-BASED - it is critical to set goals and objectives with a clear and well defined timeframe. Deadlines are what make most people switch to action! If your goal is to increase revenue by 20% - break this down to a monthly, weekly and daily target.

Not only is it important to set SMART goals, you also need to review them on a regular basis and make adjustments if necessary!
