Job Seeker Success: Anthony B.

success_target.jpg

Anthony B. was frustrated. He felt his lack of a GED or high school diploma meant a lifetime of dead-end jobs and unattainable goals. At Rubicon Programs, Anthony met with career coach Diana Bonilla to discuss how the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program could help him find his way.

Their first meeting was long and filled with emotion. Anthony had self-doubt and many personal obstacles. He even walked out in tears (and then returned).

The next day Anthony called Diana and shared something he had observed about her. Nothing fazed Diana. Nothing seemed uncorrectable or unattainable. It made him wonder if he really could find a good career with the help of WIOA. But how long would it take?

Prior to then, Anthony had held only one retail job. He wanted a hands-on trade job but had no experience. The solution was forming a solid plan and emphasizing skills on his first resume. After building an individual employment plan with his coach, Anthony built a skill-based resume and applied to various jobs. Within a week, he had several interviews set up and was hired at his first choice job.

Since then, he attended a one-week training in Arizona to become a certified installation tech. In a few months, he will transition from his novice position to a higher-wage role. At 19 years old, Anthony makes $29 an hour with full benefits and plenty of overtime opportunities.

Anthony hopes to enroll in the EDEN ROJ Electrician Program next year to expand his opportunities and experience.

"Thank you, Rubicon," Anthony said. "WIOA works, and I am proof it does. My life is way better now than a few months ago. I am happy with my progress, and I feel like I'm actually doing something with my life now! I'm proud of myself for not giving up and trust me, I was ready to!"
