We are seeking a coordinator for our initiatives in North Caroline, as well as a Movement Building Director.
SisterSong was formed in 1997 by 16 organizations of women of color from four mini-communities (Indigenous/First Nations, Black/African American, Latina, and Asian American Pacific Islander) who recognized that we have the right and responsibility to represent ourselves and our communities, and the equally compelling need to advance the perspectives and needs of women of color. We are committed to building an effective network of individuals and organizations to improve institutional policies and systems that impact the reproductive lives of marginalized communities. 

North Carolina Coordinator

Full time position available immediately
Salary Range: $47,000 - $52,000

POSITION SUMMARY: The North Carolina Coordinator (NCC) will be responsible for leading SisterSong’s state based organizing and advocacy efforts. The NCC will employ organizing and media skills with policy and advocacy experience to help promote the reproductive justice framework throughout the state with grassroots communities as well as other movements. The NCC is a key organizational representative, among those who represent SisterSong before the press, our membership and the general public.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Membership recruitment, development, and engagement
  • Strong, authentic relationship-building with SisterSong members, supporters, staff, and other stakeholders
  • Engaging practices of base building, political education, communications, grassroots community organizing and alliance-building to further SisterSong’s work in the state of North Carolina
  • Leading events, projects, organizing and culture shift work to advance reproductive justice work in the state of North Carolina
  • Create innovate campaigns and events to build base in North Carolina
  • Build SisterSong membership in North Carolina
  • Database, systems, and documentation of work
  • Represent SisterSong in alliances and coalition spaces as applicable
  • Create and disseminate high-quality reports, informational materials, and other materials for programmatic work
  • Lead coalition work and build relationships with mainstream reproductive health and rights organizations
  • On-going grassroots fundraising support
  • Work closely with reproductive healthcare professionals in North Carolina to improve cultural competency
  • Speaking engagements on SisterSong’s behalf

IDEAL CANDIATE HAS THE FOLLOWING:
  • 3-5 years of experience in grassroots community organizing, fundraising, progressive communications, and facilitation
  • Experience in public policy is preferred, but not mandatory
  • Documentation skills—photo, video, video editing
  • Ability to work cooperatively and in a team environment with peers and leadership.
  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to dismantling systems of oppression
  • Deep commitment to reproductive justice, racial justice, economic justice, and LGBTQ liberation
  • A willingness to be flexible in the face of changing conditions, emerging developments, and urgent situations
  • Proactive problem-solving skills
  • Deep knowledge of one or more communities in North Carolina
  • A desire to do long-term movement work in the reproductive justice, racial justice, or economic justice fields or other social movement fields
  • A willingness to be transformed in the service of movement work

Applicant must be located within the state of North Carolina and must be able to travel up to 50% of the time , primarily within the state of North Carolina but also regionally and nationally for leadership development opportunities. 
MOVEMENT BUILDING DIRECTOR

Full time position available immediately
Salary Range: $65,000-$75,000

POSITION SUMMARY: SisterSong is a founding organization of the Reproductive Justice movement. The Movement Building Director is a newly-created role at SisterSong that will work to build power among communities of color, LGBTQ folks, immigrants and refugees, and our allies for issue and electoral campaigns that make real change in their lives.

The Movement Building Director leads our base-building work, including our relationships with members, organizations, and coalitions, with an eye to developing our organizational muscle for efficient, strategic, and creative outreach, engagement, and activation of a nationwide power base, beginning with the Southern United States.   

The Movement Building Director should be willing and able to work in an environment that emphasizes a team approach, and should deeply understand SisterSong’s commitment to reproductive justice and working in communities of color. 

The Movement Building Director reports directly to the Executive Director. This is a full-time (40 hours per week), exempt, permanent, supervisory, fully benefits-eligible position based in Atlanta, Georgia, and paid an annual salary range of $65,000 - $75,000 depending on experience and qualifications.

GENERAL ROLES
  • Deep commitment to SisterSong’s mission, values and principles.
  • Strategic vision and management experience to successfully lead a team with diverse talents within an organization of diverse needs and fast-moving opportunities and challenges.
  • Participates as a senior leader at SisterSong and takes ownership and accountability for overseeing and managing SisterSong program areas, budgets, and staff and for helping make SisterSong and a healthy and productive work environment, and ensures SisterSong’s programs are aligned with SisterSong’s mission, values and organizational goals.
  • Identifies, cultivates, and expands partnerships across social justice sectors.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE - BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Build a mass base of people who will turn out for Reproductive Justice. This base will engage and activate on an ongoing basis and at a scale that leaves no doubt about our movement’s power. Our mass base will identify with SisterSong as a political home and will recognize their role’s impact. The Movement Building Director will design and execute mass base-building strategies and tactics.

  • Lead SisterSong in developing base-building and organizing methodology and manage our base infrastructure. Develop and organize a collective framework and vision for base-building. Build and manage organizational infrastructure to support our base. Invest in staff development on base building strategies and tactics through training and coaching.

  • Be a leader for the organizing team. Serve as an excellent supervisor for organizers. Ensure that organizers show up with our values and enact our operating principles: being people-centered, acting with integrity, and working with determination and hustle. Ensure that organizers deliver on their goals and outcomes, and get investment and development as they organize.

  • Organize our members and allies. Lead the development of, investment in, and collaboration with members and allies. Build deep relationships with our members and allies. Move our members and allies into alignment and strategy with us. Support our Membership Coordinator on developing and implementing a nationwide member recruitment strategy to broaden our reach and impact. 

  • Direct innovative, cutting edge strategies and tactics that get us to scale. Stay up to date on the most effective strategies and tactics for mass base-building. Excellently operationalize a variety of these strategies and tactics, and make decisions about when and how to experiment, expand, and stop these initiatives.

  • Create new, and nurture existing relationships with partners: base-building organizers, academics, policymakers, and media.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum of seven years of increasingly responsible programmatic work experience in a nonprofit, philanthropic, public interest consulting, or social entrepreneurship setting; minimum three years of senior management experience including staff supervision, are required.
  • Deeply skilled with public speaking, facilitation, and training; extensive training and outreach experience in a senior role in a collective, network or community movement building role.
  • Proven track record of creating, leading, adapting, and growing programs and programmatic strategies for growth, impact, and visibility.
  • Staff management and development experience and the desire and ability to oversee and coach teams are required.
  • Experience providing technical assistance, training, and/or capacity building support to grassroots organizations and community organizers is strongly preferred.
  • Deeply held commitment to social justice.
  • Experience working with diverse partners and communities of color.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, relationship-building ability.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communications skills.
  • Strong ability to perform well under pressure.
  • Bachelor’s degree required in a related field.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and allocating resources and budgeting for programs.
  • Experience working collaboratively with operations, finance, and/or fundraising and development staff and resources to achieve programmatic growth and goals is required.
