As we begin out journey into the year 2018, we cannot but wonder what changes lie ahead of us, and what things will be the same. To help you in answering this annual question, I present to you for your consideration our own Newsletter from August 1987.  So let's journey back eleven years and see if anything has really changed.

Our  lead page below touts the upcoming EXPO 88 ATLANTIC BAKERY EXPO. Additionally, it contains an article discussing a newly proposed Mandatory Health Benefits Bill.

So let us examine the facts.  The EXPO is still put on by New York State and New Jersey Bakers and held in Atlantic City. However, the Convention Hall is no longer on the Boardwalk, and rather than the Fall, be prepared to join us in the Spring on April 8 - 9, 2018.

Senator Edward Kennedy, Democrat, MA., introduced a Mandatory Health Benefits Bill requiring employers to pay 80% of the coverage, with provisions to protect small business of 25 employees or less.
Today read the paper, or turn on the TV and realise that, except for the intensity, not much has really changed.  The article ends with two Democrats criticising the Kennedy Health Insurance Bill as too costly to small business.  Today ?, well you decide.

 Education Corner

Mary Sidor, New York State Bakers recently traveled to the Culinary Institute at Monroe College to judge a contest by some very talented, hardworking students at the school. It also gave her the opportunity to rekindle old friendships with the Professors.

Mary was tasked with the difficult job to determine which of these fabulous creations would win.

Congratulations to the winners: Rebecca Thomas, Casey Creazzo, Geannaby Hernandez,
Allison Aponte, Michelle Ruiz, and Tamera Evans-Garrick.

As part of our ongoing commitment  to support the Educational aspirations  of  promising bakers, the NYS Bakers Association awarded $ 2,500 in prize money and gifts for the contestants.

Our thanks to the students and staff of the Culinary Institute at Monroe College for a wonderful day, and we look forward to welcoming the graduating class to our industry.
