These Two Major Events Took Place For the First Time in Recorded History
And
We Were Part of It
____________________________________

This is a fish tale you can pass down to your grandchildren.  If you were there, you were part of history. Yes, on August  21, 2017 the Annual New York State Bakers Fishing Trip and Total Eclipse of the Sun coincided for the first time ever. It is this combination of events that will forever live in our minds.  It began as a usual morning, but that was soon to change, as we arrived at Sheepshead Bay just after dawn to board our boat, the Ocean Eagle V.  On this balmy and sunny day, we were greeted by Captain and crew, along with some delicious baked items provided by our Association members.

The plan was to sail out into the Bay and catch some porgies or fluke , which was exactly what we began to do.  Lines were cast out and a few got some quick hits from Sea Bass but were not able to pull anything edible in.

So we did the next best thing and attacked the Danish and coffee.

Within a few minutes the weather had a precipitous change.  The temperature dropped, then suddenly shot up.  Strong winds came off the shore and started to push the Ocean Eagle V further out in the bay.  The Captain dropped anchor in an effort to stabilize the craft and hold us in place but to no avail.  The waves pitched us up and tossed us around, and before we could go for a second cup of coffee, we found ourselves pulled out into the ocean battling huge waves.

It got so bad that some of us actually put down our coffee, stopped eating the Danish and held onto the railings so as not to be swept overboard.  A small tornado appeared bringing fish to the surface.

This storm went on for quite a while, and all thought that surely this was the end. Suddenly as quickly as it came upon us, the winds subsided and the clouds were swept away leaving a bright blue sky and calm waters. As we stared up into the clear sky, darkness began to creep in.

It was then we remembered that today was also the solar eclipse. As soon as the moon started to pass in front of the sun,

strange fish of all shapes and sizes began to hit on the lines we still had  overboard.  We frantically ran to our fishing poles and fought with the monsters we had hooked.

We were just just amazed with what we caught, and truthfully a little freaked out to boot.

Someone caught a fish that reminded him of his Grandfather, so he threw it back.

It took three girls to get this one on the boat.

And this most likely would have won the pool for biggest fish, but it was not one of the fish categories we agreed on before setting out.

The fishing continued throughout the remainder of the eclipse, but once it was over, the fish retreated to the depths from which they came.

The Captain decided it was best to return and set a course back to Sheepshead Bay.  We were relieved when we saw the familiar shoreline of Brooklyn..

Unfortunately, because of how far we had to travel, we ran out of gas before we made it back to the dock, so we did what we have done for so many years now.  We fished in the Bay and ate the Danish while waiting for the Coast Guard to bring us in.

Now the fish in the Bay were a little smaller than the ones in the Ocean; however they put up quite a fight. This one fought for almost an hour before being pulled on-board.

Then back to the Sea Bass again. However, Karen  did win the pool.

Others tried their very best to beat her.

But Meghan came in a close second and inched the others out.

Alas the Coast Guard arrived and safely towed us to Pier 5.

So it was time to sit back and relax again.

Well it certainly was an exciting day with exciting fish stories to tell to anyone who wishes to hear.  Please join us next year.

Special thanks to Aaron Wasserman for arranging the trip and the Captain and crew of the Ocean Eagle V for bringing us home alive.

RED, WHITE, AND BLUEBERRY PARFAIT

1 loaf pound cake, about 10 oz
1/4 cup strawberry or red currant jelly
1 pint vanilla yogurt
2 cups blueberries, fresh or frozen and thawed

With a serrated knife, cut 14 slices, 1/4-inch thick, from pound cake; return remaining cake to the freezer for another use. Spread 7 of the slices with jelly; top with plain slices; trim off and discard crusts. With a 1-1/4 inch star or other shape cookie cutter, cut a shape from four sandwiches; set stars aside. Cut sandwich trimmings and remaining whole sandwiches into 3/4-inch squares. Into four 8-ounce parfait or wine glasses, place half the cake squares, half the blueberries, and all but 4 tablespoons frozen yogurt, dividing equally. Top with the remaining cake squares and blueberries. Spoon dollops of the remaining yogurt on top of each parfait; top each with a star and serve.

Yield: 4 servings

Note: National Blueberry Month is celebrated in July in the United States, and many bakers take advantage of blueberries' positive image among consumers coupled with the abundance and availability of U. S. blueberries in the coming months. A century ago, the highbush blueberry was a revolutionary development which has now evolved into today's blueberry industry. July is also the anniversary of the American Revolution which resonates with the revolutionary nature of blueberries!

With  their thoroughly American heritage, blueberries are one of the few fruits native to the Americas and have inspired many down-home American desserts. These include Blueberry Buckle from New England's blueberry country, traditionally served with nutmeg-blueberry sauce; the Yankee favorite, Blueberry Pan Dowdy; plus Blueberry Shortcake, Blueberry Cobbler, Blueberry Crumble and/or Blueberry Brown Betty, to name a few.
