December 17, 2024

Dear Providence,

As the holiday season draws near, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt wishes to you and your loved ones. May this time be filled with joy, peace, and warmth. As we wrap up this year and look ahead to the next, I hope it brings you and your loved ones opportunity, joy, and success. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

With the holiday season comes the excitement of gifts and packages arriving at your door. To ensure everything gets to you safely, remember to use delivery alerts to track shipments and opt for secure options like requiring signatures, using lockers, or coordinating with trusted neighbors. Stay alert and shop with peace of mind. Visit here for more safety tips. Also, you can find safety tips to consider when buying and selling from online marketplaces here.

A gentle reminder that the Oakton Community Open House is tonight, Tuesday, December 17th from 6:30-9:00 pm at the Jim Scott Community Center. There will be short presentations beginning at 6:30 pm and 7:45 pm. You can find more information below.

Lastly, the Oakmont Rec Center has reopened after a month-long closure with exciting environmental upgrades and building improvements. These changes elevate both the functionality and appearance of the facility. Check out the upgrades and all Oakmont has to offer for 2025!

Plastic Free Toolkit

Clean Fairfax recently published a Plastic-Free Toolkit to help farmers markets, holiday bazaars, and craft and art markets, reduce or eliminate single-use plastic bags.

The Plastic-Free Toolkit is a compilation

of the best policies and practices for phasing out single-use plastic bags at the

farmers markets. The methods and information in this resource can also help

markets transition to an entirely plastic-free market.

Access the toolkit here.

The Most Wonderful Time to Recycle

It's always a wonderful time to recycle, especially during the holidays when there are usually more items to consider! Items like paper holiday cards, gift bags/boxes, and electronics are more abundant. There may be more food scraps following large holiday dinners, and single-use items like red cups (not recyclable), paper plates, and plastic utensils.

More info here.

2025 Farmers Market Application is Now Open

Fairfax County Park Authority is looking for farmers and producers within a 125-mile radius of Fairfax County (with a few exceptions for hard-to-find goodies, such as dairy and organic produce). Our markets are strictly producer-only, meaning everything sold must be grown, raised, or made by you. Locally sourced ingredients are preferred!

Park Authority farmers markets do not include craft vendors or food trucks.
