May 4, 2025

I am in Costa Rica right now updating the Teacher's Guide for Isabela captura un Congo and re-editing a book for my adult language classes with what has changed in 10 years. I'm taking video of howler monkeys and going to a "Tope" (there are horses) and listening to live music and watching the sunsets. At this very moment I can hear birds and howler monkey papas moving their troops from tree to tree with deep-throated loud howls.

I remember how much I loved writing this book and how the drive to write it was overwhelming and inspiring. A howler monkey fell from an electrical wire right above us. I wrote about what the people were doing to solve the problem.

Wednesday I saw the solved problem -- a problem solved by the people here in Playa Hermosa -- and I video recorded a howler monkey using that solution.

New Comprehensible Readers for Language Students

How do we make books come alive for our students? How do we help them to see pictures in their heads while they read so stories become entertainment and escape to faraway lands?

If you struggle with these same questions, I'd recommend attending the #CIreboot this summer to get ideas from a lot of teachers who have found the secret sauce. I would also recommend.... reading. Once you fall in love with a story it's so much easier to sell your students on checking it out.
