All funding is 'crowd-funding', if you think about it. Or, as the philosopher said, "No man is an island." What can crowd-funding do? Crowd-fund your lunch? Crowd-fund a new car? Crowd-fund a needed medical procedure for a sick friend? Crowd-fund a new school playground structure? Crowd fund a charity, a municipal city government, or a historic building earthquake retrofit? Crowd-funding can do it all!
This summer, the newsletters from Tom Luong Films might send you running for your copy of the Oxford English Dictionary for definitions of terms like 'investor', 'contribution', 'partner', or 'participant'. Yes, it's another Internet language-barrier invention. For start-up companies who need dollars to kick start their dreams, 'crowd-sourcing' is a business model that has been successfully used to raised large amounts, as far back as 1884, when completion funds were needed to build a pedestal for the famous Statue of Liberty in New York (from Wikipedia). Newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer raised more than $100,000 in six months for the cause. More than 125,000 people dropped their nickels, dimes and dollars into the pot. And that was a lot of money in 1884!!
Wikipedia reports that in 2012, financing through this approach topped out at more than two billion ($2.66 billion) US dollars, with more than half of that in the U.S. Without skipping a beat, the Internet and new Business App programmers have created dozens of popular websites and apps, moving out thousands of start-up business financing campaigns in these models. 'Kickstarter', 'IndieGoGo', 'Microventures' and many others are ready and waiting, and Tom Luong Films will be on-deck with their own sites and sources.
Does it work? One rock-n-roll band raised $50,000 in two years, by placing fans on a lifetime concert guest-list. Many other success stories suggest a bucket-load of good will towards various entrepreneurs with the courage to try new ventures, new ways of reaching people, new ways of making money, and new ways of bringing them together. In the Land of Plenty, it's asking-for-the-taking. Independent feature films like those from Tom Luong Films and myself, (writer-producer Julian Phillips), are ready hat-in-hand.
So check us out. Your business, your students, your kids or family-members, your bank or loan-department, your location or setting, your campground-resort, and your community educators, can all get a lift and a positive learning experience, as participants in Tom Luong's next film project, which takes place in the stunning San Bernardino mountains. Money returns can arrive back to you in all sorts of ways, and real cash payouts for real cash investments are combined with legal-status transparent business-practices, for the good of all concerned.
