Happy Friday Morning Neighbors!
Thank you to all the folks that attended our neighborhood organizing meeting last night. We had a robust conversation where we learned a little about each other, talked about the direction of the neighborhood, and addressed a few important issues.
Big shout out to Lisa Krieg from City of Norman for helping us understand what it takes to get stop signs. Additionally, we had former council member Lee Hall in attendance as well as current Council Member Helen Grant.
We asked a few key questions to get everyone thinking and talking. And here is a recap of what we thought:
Question 1: What do you think makes a great neighborhood?
(This sort of evolved into a wish list.)
- Solar street lighting
- Police Call Box
- Storm Shelter Sharing program
- Tree trimming and maintenance
- Seed and Plant exchange
- Neighborly sharing of resources … veggies… flowers… and doing things for one another like Mowing.
- Good Lighting
- Curb Gardens (curb appeal… beautification)
- Place Making signage and Learning circle
- 988 and Norman Caravans presence (future speaker request)
Question 2: What questions do you have for the police department?
(They will be visiting with us at the August meeting)
This is a raw compilation of the questions you gave us.
- What can be done at Cate Park for people living there and trashing the park. Loose Dogs
- Why do we have a homeless highway through our neighborhood?
- How many instances of emergency mental health response teams responded to call coming into NPD?
- How can we as neighbors help ensure that those in our neighborhood who need resources receive the help they need instead of being relocated or arrested?
- Does NPD tell neighbors that are complaining about homelessness about the resources like caravans and other street outreach?
- Can people call 988 for a mental health crisis ?
- Why do the police keep allowing people at Food and Shelter to be naked?
- Can we get better lighting?
- How important is lighting in crime prevention?
- Why were the tent towns destroyed and where did you place the humans?
- What can community do for our police?
- How do you recommend people organize a neighborhood watch?
- How much police time would be saved if citizens used 988 or homeless outreach services?
- Is PanHandling illegal?
- Do officers have discretionary funds to do community projects/outreach/ buy pizza etc.
- When is 988 called by police? At what point does NPD turn over the call?
- What local outreach do you partner with in order to connect citizens in need with resources? What is your current relationship status with them?
- What are the volunteer opportunities with NPD?
WE also were tasked with talking to our neighbors in a few different ways.
- Use the NACOK cards to exchange information with neighbors closes to your vicinity. These cards basically start the conversation regarding who should be in the neighborhood and watching out for each other.
- We gave out flyers for our next meeting with a door knocking territory. We hope that the folks that have invested their time and energy into coming to the meetings and having the conversations will walk their block and talk to their neighbors and invite them to participate.
Our next meeting will be August 17, 2023
6:00pm – 7:30pm.
At Alameda Church of Christ.
801 Alameda
Please invite someone.
There will be a light meal provided.
