Lake County Sheriff’s Vacation House Watch 
The Lake County Sheriff's Office offers a "Vacation House Watch" for residents of their patrol areas. In Shields Township, that would be the unincorporated areas. If you are planning to go out of town and would like to take advantage of this program, please call their Dispatch Center a few hours prior to leaving. 847-549-5200.

View Camera Images from Major Intersections
Did you know that you can look in on the road conditions from your computer or mobile device before you hit the roads? You have access to the Lake County PASSAGE cameras which means you can look at real-time snapshots from major intersections. Go to   , turn on camera images in “Layer Options” at the top right, find intersections along your route, and check road conditions in each direction.

Seniors: If you are 65 years or older, you are eligible for a reduced fare permit.

Disabled: All persons with a qualifying disability who are not enrolled in the Illinois Department on Aging’s Benefit Access program are eligible for reduced fare permit. 

Veterans: If you are a veteran with a disability, a letter from the Veteran's Administration regarding your service connected disability must be submitted with your application. For more information...
You can register at the Shields Township office for this curb-to-curb service that takes the elderly or disabled where they need to go. Once you are registered and have made a reservation, you will need $3 for a one way trip and $6 for a round trip.
Low Income Heating Energy Assistance Program 
Did you know one of the duties of our office is to help our low income residents obtain heating assistance. If you are aware of a Shields resident who meets the income guidelines, please have them contact Devon Nelson. (847) 234-0802

General Assistance: The Township’s General Assistance Program provides monthly financial assistance to low-income residents to help in meeting their basic living expenses. The process of applying involves filling out an application, then making an appointment for an interview. For more information, call Devon Nelson, Case Manager, at 847-234-0802 . The application is available for download here .

Emergency Assistance: Assistance may be provided by the Township to alleviate life-threatening circumstances. Residents experiencing financial hardship may apply for this assistance to pay for shelter, food, utilities, medical services, or transportation. An individual may receive Emergency Assistance once in a 12-month period. Call Devon Nelson, Case Manager, at 847-234-0802 for information.

Apply for Township Of Illinois Scholarship
Each year, since 1989, the Township Officials of Illinois Scholarship Fund has awarded funds to graduating high school seniors to continue their education at Illinois colleges/universities. 
To be eligible, you must meet all of the following criteria:
Must be a graduating Illinois high school senior with a minimum GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.
Must be a U.S. citizen and resident of Illinois. Must plan to attend a university/college in Illinois.
Must have a history of extracurricular activities that demonstrates a willingness to accept leadership responsibilities (student government, club officer, etc.) or a commitment to civic responsibility, social consciousness and a willingness to serve the community (community service projects, volunteer activities with local service agencies or charitable institutions, etc.)
Must submit a 500-word essay on The Role of Township Government in Today’s Society and in the Future that will include information gained from an interview with an elected township official.
Must submit two letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, local officials or business people.
Must submit an official high school transcript.
Must submit a cover letter and completed application form.
Must plan to enroll at an Illinois school as a full-time undergraduate student. 
Make An Impact on Lake County Homelessness
Volunteer for the annual Homeless Point-in-Time (PIT) Homeless Count on Jan. 30, 2019. Each year, the Lake County Coalition for the Homeless holds the Point-in-Time Homeless Count where volunteers search across Lake County to interview and offer assistance to unsheltered people experiencing homelessness. The data gathered helps coordinate services for people experiencing homelessness and allows organizations to track progress toward the goal of ending homelessness.
What is Text-A-Tip?
Text-A-Tip is a 24/7 anonymous text crisis hotline offering emotional support for middle school and high school youth.
Who Should Use Text-A-Tip
The short answer is anyone! Text-A-Tip is available for anyone in need of emotional support, at any time. While the line is intended for crisis situations, you do not need to be in crisis to use the service. They also encourage you to use Text-A-Tip if you have concerns about a friend or loved one and need support in getting them help.

Property Tax Relief
Illinois law provides homeowners with homestead exemptions that may lower the amount of property tax you owe. Our office can assist you with filing your exemptions. Call us at 847-234-3485  for more information .
Opportunities to Give Back
Help your neighbors in need by donating to our Food Pantry. Hours are 9 am to 4 pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the township office. Contact Heather Kerr at 847-579-9739 or to organize a food drive.
