SCRO News

President's Message:

"Greetings, fellow Scarborough residents. I have nothing but good news this month … and a call to action for all of us, as we launch the “Scarborough Votes” campaign."

The Mayoral Candidates Debate on Scarborough Issues pulls Scarborough together.

SCRO was honoured to co-host the Mayoral Debate on Scarborough Issues on May 24. This has turned out to

be one of the signature events in this mayoral election.

This debate has put Scarborough “in play” during this election. More on that below.

A groundbreaking donation to U of T Scarborough … from a Scarborough entrepreneur.

On May 15, UTSC announced a gift from Scarborough-born entrepreneur Sam Ibrahim, President of Arrow Group of Companies, of $25 million to help build the Sam Ibrahim Centre for Inclusive Excellence in Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Leadership at UTSC.

It is gratifying to see such high impact philanthropy from a Scarborough-born entrepreneur, whose business is located right here in Scarborough.

Earlier this year, SHN received a transformative gift of $50 million from Orlando Corporation. Canada's largest privately owned industrial real estate developer.

Orlando made a concurrent gift of $25 million to U of T Scarborough to help launch a medical school in Scarborough. Wow! Good things are happening here in Scarborough. We see it and we feel it. And now we’re being noticed by major donors, in our backyard and beyond, who are helping to fund transformative education for our young people and better healthcare for us all.

Happy June Scarborough-Guildwood!

The month of June is Indigenous Peoples Month, a time to learn, reflect, and celebrate the diversity of First Nations, Métis and Inuit across Tkaronto (Toronto) and all of Turtle Island (what is now called North America). This June, events are taking place across Toronto, including the Indigenous Arts Festival, Na-Me-Res Pow Wow, and National Indigenous Peoples Day Sunrise Ceremony. The City of Toronto remains committed to advancing truth, justice and reconciliation and is working closely with Indigenous partners to continue implementing the City's first Reconciliation Action Plan. Hi folks! Spring is here and we are excited to announce some completed projects to kick off the warm-

weather season.

The expansion of the outdoor orangutan habitat is complete, and guests will be welcome to view the

new space starting June 30 th ! This has been a multi-year project and we are thrilled to be announcing it’s

completion. There are some surprise additions that will bring your orangutan viewing experience to new

heights. A 17-metre (56-foot) climbing post for the orangutans to enjoy has been erected in front of the

Indian rhino habitat, which is connected to a second 20-metre (68-foot) post just outside the Indo-

Malaya Pavilion doors. You may be thinking “wait a minute, that’s right over the boardwalk!” That’s

right! If you look up, you may see an orangutan swinging right overhead as you make your way up to the

Indo-Malaya pavilion.
