Let's Talk About Communication
When people inquire about our community, they often ask:
What happens if you don't get along with someone in the community?
And it's a good question because we all know that relationships and communication with other people, even the ones you know and love, can be difficult and often result in misunderstanding and harm. That's why C Street Villagers have committed to be better family members, friends, neighbors and citizens by learning, practicing and using NVC (Non Violent Communication) to aid in more effective communication, connection and compassion by holding everyone's needs with care.
NVC was started by Marshall Rosenberg in the 60s, and we were inspired by his notion that 'every word and action is an attempt to meet life serving needs and make connection a priority'. We invited one of Rosenberg's associates and trained NVC facilitator, Meganwind Eoyang, to lead us in a series of 4 workshops
before
we move into C Street Village. In this way we hope to communicate more effectively in all our meetings and interactions.
We learned the basic 'formula' of stating Observation, Feelings, Needs and Requests and how hard it is to move from evaluations, demands, strategies and hearing 'no' to shift conflicts from opponents to allies. We learned one of the basic questions to answer is 'what is alive in
me
right now?' and 'what is alive in
you
right now?' We learned the Jackal and Giraffe ways of listening and how to 'tell it like it is'. We had a lot of fun using the exercise 'Aunt Mille and Uncle Joe' to help us shift conflict situations and find the needs similar to both sides that can then be used to find requests and solutions that would work for all.
And we learned that when you use NVC and put your attention on connection via empathy, self-expression and self-connection then you are much more likely
not
to disconnect from another person using diagnosis, denial, demands or feelings of deservedness. We all learned so much and realized that we still have a long way to go before we can easily identify with ease true feelings and identify the universal needs under the feelings expressed both verbally and through body language.
Having everyone in C Street Village be familiar with NVC is a huge gift for everyone and really shifts the energy of interaction and feelings of connection. We all felt the shift and eagerly celebrated the power this way of communicating brings to all parties involved.

Meet Our Community Members,
Elina Coulter, Paul Chaffee, & Laszlo Chaffee
Paul is a statistician and Elena teaches parent-child music classes and runs a business. Laszlo is in sixth grade. We love the idea of cohousing because it’s a sensible way to live. Children have built-in-playmates, babysitters and adopted aunties, uncles, and grandparents. We all get needed face-to-face contact with other humans working together to cook, craft, exercise and just enjoy one another’s company. Cohousing offers a perfect balance of privacy and community and we can’t wait to be part of it!!
