New exhibit highlights history of the West End

Moving Forward

The Henry F. Hauser Museum’s new exhibit delving into the history of Sierra Vista’s West End will open on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

“The Historic West End” will explore the early settlement and development of Sierra Vista directly outside the gates of Fort Huachuca, the growth of the West End followed by the movement of goods and services to other parts of the community, and recent efforts to revitalize the area as an entertainment district with a downtown atmosphere. The exhibit will be open during regular museum hours Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is located inside the Ethel H. Berger Center at 2950 E. Tacoma Street.

“As revitalization efforts in the West End gain momentum, this is the perfect time to reflect on the history of the area where our community began,” Henry F. Hauser Museum Curator Elizabeth Wrozek says. “Understanding the relationship between Fort Huachuca, Sierra Vista, and economic development in the West End is vital when looking at the factors that have continued to shape our community.”

SVF&MS to host open house at new EMS substation

With Sierra Vista Fire & Medical Services will host a ribbon cutting and open house on Friday, Oct. 14, from 10 a.m. to noon to celebrate the completion of the department’s new emergency medical services substation located on the northeast corner of Buffalo Soldier Trail and 7^th Street.

The public is invited to attend the open house and tour the station, located at 2051 N. 7^th Street. The celebration will begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Additional parking is available across 7^th Street at Tompkins Park.

Known as Station 4, the EMS substation began operations on August 1 and is manned 24/7 by an EMT and paramedic with one ambulance. To date, the station has run 353 calls.

“This new station greatly enhances our EMS coverage on the southern end of Sierra Vista, while improving our capacity to respond citywide,” SVF&MS Chief Brian Jones says.

The substation was funded in part by a $1.4 million Defense Community Infrastructure Program grant from the Department of Defense Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation. The location offers rapid access to Fort Huachuca, enabling the EMS crew at the station to respond if the one located on post is already on a call. It will also improve EMS response to the many soldiers and families living off post.

Extraordinary Activities

Join your local law enforcement and members of your community for a weekend of resolution and reconciliation at Sierra Vista Faith & Blue on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. National Faith & Blue Weekend is a collaborative effort to build bridges and break biases.

This local Faith & Blue event is being hosted by Interfaith Christian Ministries and the Sierra Vista Police Department. Learn more about this national initiative.

Uncommon Recreation

Things will be getting spooky at the Art Studio with October's featured project: Spooky Cat Bowls! These bowls come together quickly, are easy to make, and are a great fit for the season.

The cost is $10 per person and includes clay, two visits to the studio (one to build and one to glaze), and instructions to complete your project.
