The Outcomes Team
Karen Morgret Appointed to Commission on People
with Disabilities

TLC's Outcomes Service's Assistant Director Karen Morgret was recently appointed to the Commission on People with Disabilities.   The Commission advises the County Executive Isiah Leggett on programs and services concerning the nearly 190,000 residents in Montgomery County with disabilities.

The Commission has 25 voting members, and at least 5 non-voting members. The commission includes representation from individuals with disabilities as well as parents and service providers. The Department of Recreation, Department of Transportation, the Human Rights Commission, and the Department of Health and Human Services are also represented.

Karen's appointment is for three years and she is looking forward to serving our community and raising visibility for TLC. Karen states, "I'm honored to have this opportunity to advocate for individuals with disabilities in Montgomery County and provide feedback to the county on issues affecting lives including: employment rights, and welfare of the people the commission represents."

Outcomes Hosts Mock Interviews for TLC's Katherine Thomas School Students

Outcomes staff are always happy to support students at TLC's Katherine Thomas School (KTS). KTS serves preschool through 12th grade students with moderate to severe language and learning disabilities and/or autism. Mock interviews were conducted at Outcomes for nineteen high school juniors and seniors.

Shelley McGinness, Transition Support Specialist organized the event with the assistance of other specialists at KTS. "Thank you all for the incredible opportunity that you provided for our students! You made this experience both realistic and comfortable for them."

Students had the chance to shine and they all felt confident about how they presented themselves. Staff provided positive feedback, constructive criticism and plenty of encouragement to students.

Sarah Shick, Intake Coordinator, leads the Transition Advocacy program at Outcomes. "Interviewing can be challenging.  Opportunities like these, where students have a chance to work through the process, are a great benefit to job seekers."

Community Supported Living Arrangements (CSLA)
Program at Outcomes

by Pamela Abramoff, Employment Specialist

TLC's Outcomes Service provides valuable support through the Community Supported Living Arrangements (CSLA) program. The goal of this program is to guide and support individuals with disabilities towards community independence and to assist with the everyday needs of the consumers we serve.  Outcomes staff utilizes person centered planning to assist our consumers in areas such as budgeting, bill paying, basic home maintenance, organizational skills, preparing healthy and budget-friendly meals. We also provide assistance with scheduling and travel to appointments, and we help our consumers navigate community resources that may affect their housing, food, medical and disability benefits.

Staff take pride in providing our consumers an array of low-cost, fun and stimulating activities, while also creating the opportunity

for our clients to experience friendship and camaraderie with others in the community. These opportunities include participation in consumer-hosted, staff-led cooking workshops; cook-outs at local parks, day trips to local establishments such as the Harley Davidson motorcycle factory, Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, Smithsonian museums, National Zoo and trips to amusement parks and county fairs. We accompany our clients to local sporting events, musical performances and plays and our consumers also enjoy participating in activities such as bowling, miniature golf and swimming at local pools.

Outcomes works diligently to help consumers live independently and fully integrate into the community. We place the focus on our consumers' abilities, not their disabilities.
