WELCOME!

I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and tell you how pleased I am to be here.  I joined  Outcomes in June and I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know the staff and all of our consumers.

This field isn't new to me.  I have more than 35 years of experience providing services to individuals with developmental disabilities. I have expertise in strategic planning, business management, staff development, organization development and programming for those with developmental disabilities. I consider myself a strong advocate for people with special needs, in fact, I was a selected member of the Governor's Commission on Autism - Workforce Development Taskforce.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or just to say hello.  I am thrilled to be a part of such a strong team and an organization like TLC that has been serving this community for 65 years.

Thank you!

Donald Speaking to Outcomes

Former Outcomes consumer, Donald, visited TLC's Employment Development Services (EDS) group. EDS is a DORS funded vocational program designed to assist job seekers in expanding their job development and retention skills, and to prepare them to gain meaningful employment.

Donald received EDS services two years ago and spoke to the group, sharing his experiences and advice about work transition. Donald spoke openly and honestly and had great advice for attendees. Everyone was truly inspired by Donald's words. Donald also started a Facebook page five years ago. He currently has over 46,000 fans! Check out People With Disabilities Rock.

Donald shared that he had applied for a job that he felt was a bit of a reach for him and he was waiting to hear abut it. A day later, Donald emailed to tell us that he got the job! We are so proud of Donald and grateful for his willingness to discuss his experiences.

Ephraim Helps Celebrate TLC's 65th Anniversary

Ephraim has been a long time consumer at TLC's Outcomes Service and the " resident artist" at TLC's Outcomes Service since 1990. From the time he was a young child, he loved to draw. On June 20, 1978, the last day of high school, Ephraim was in an automobile accident and sustained a traumatic brain injury. He spent four years in rehabilitation hospitals and did not return to his artwork until 1983, when he enrolled in an Art Therapy class at Montgomery College. He started drawing and painting again through our Day Program in 1993 and has been taking art classes at Montgomery College s ince 1995. He has had many successful art shows, and has allowed his work to be featured in many TLC publications.

When TLC staff asked Ephraim for a piece of art to use as the theme for TLC's 65th Anniversary celebration, Ephraim willingly agreed.  His beautiful artwork was used for the design of all print materials, was the inspiration for table settings and center pieces.  The celebration was a wonderful success, showcasing TLC's staff, families, friends, and generous supporters.  We are grateful for Ephraims's continued support.
Strategic Goals Guiding Our Way

Strategic planning is important for organizational sustainability. TLC conducted a strategic planning initiative in 2014-2015, where goals and action steps were determined for the next five years. TLC staff and board worked with a consultant who specializes in strategic planning with nonprofits.

Three main areas of focus include visibility, development and programming.  The Executive Director is responsible for completion of the strategic goals in collaboration with the Board of Trustees and the TLC Leadership. Teams have been designated and meet regularly and collaborate on planning and initiatives with a goal of helping TLC continue to meet the needs of the community.

Inter ACC/DD Awards

Congratulations to TLC's Emily Pavlin! Emily, who works with TLC's Outcomes Service, was honored by Inter ACC/DD Montgomery County as a Direct Support staff. Gopi Swamynathan of Hot Breads was honored as our community leader.

Emily, Community Resource Advocate at TLC's Outcomes Services, helps individuals find and keep jobs and live independently in the community. Emily is tenacious and builds trust with those she serves. They know she cares and will do everything she can to help them succeed.

Gopi Swamynathan, owner of Hotbreads Bakery in the Kentlands is an outstanding partner to Outcomes. Gopi is genuinely invested in the success of our consumers and has hired two, but he is also committed to all individuals with disabilities.  He currently has four employees with disabilities and is training four more. Gopi's dream is to one day open a restaurant that is run and operated by individuals with disabilities.

Congratulations Emily and Gopi!  Your contributions are truly celebrated.
