Last Monday, March 27, SAMHSA released guidance on the MATE Act provision that requires prescribers of controlled substances to complete 8-hours of training on substance use disorders upon renewing or receiving their DEA license.
This guidance emphasized the importance of "incorporating training on substance use disorders into routine healthcare" and continuing to work collectively to address the overdose crisis. Below are a few pertinent details about the training requirement:
- The 8-hours of training can be cumulative across multiple sessions
- Trainings can occur in a variety of formats as long as the training is provided by or approved by the groups listed on the announcement

Past trainings on opioid or other substance use disorders, including the DATA 2000 waiver trainings, can count towards a DEA registrant’s 8-hour training requirement
