Dear Friends of Indigena,

April is an exciting time of the year at Indigena. We have spent the winter season sourcing new works, which are now arriving in the Gallery ahead of our busy summer season.

Many of the artists below are considered Master carvers, hailing from seven different Arctic Communities. Please enjoy this preview of these beautiful pieces.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support of the artists and their work and we will look forward to seeing you soon in Stratford!

Sincerely,

Erla, Patti and Doug

BILLY MERKOSAK - Mattimitalik (Pond Inlet)

I work in granite, marble, antlers and ivory. But I particularly like whalebone. It gives me the feeling from when whale hunters left a lot of whalebones on our shores and some were washed up—gives me something to do with materials that are laying around. [...] Instead of sitting down and listening to someone talking, if you see a carving or mask, they tell you a story, and gives you an emotion that comes from within. That’s what spirituality is.
