Welcome Back Message

First Day of School Highlights

Welcome to Middle School!

The 2023-2024 school year begins the start of our new middle school model, which consists of grades six through eight. Our middle school staff across the district did an outstanding job as they went above and beyond to ensure their students and families felt welcomed and confident as they began this new journey. They were out in full force, greeting families as they drove in, giving high-fives as students exited the bus, helping to provide schedules, and directing students where to go. The alternate first day of school schedule allowed sixth and seventh grade students to participate in games and activities with their new classmates, tour the school, and work with current middle school student leaders to understand middle school routines better.

Welcome Kindergarteners!

Monday, August 28, was our incoming Kindergarteners' first day of school. Our staff were ready to greet and welcome our newest students and their families. There were backdrops set up, photos taken, and hugs galore as KSD's newest scholars said goodbye to their families and entered their new classrooms.

Welcome Cougars!

Our newest school, Canyon Ridge Middle School, opened its doors and welcomed students on Wednesday, August 23. Principal Brian Gauthier and his staff were excited and ready to welcome their students into the Cougar family. We invite you to join us for the Canyon Ridge Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony that will take place on Saturday, September 9 at 9:00 a.m.

Free Meals Now Offered at 39 Schools

We are excited to announce for the 2023-2024 school year 37 schools are eligible under the federal Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program to offer free breakfast and lunch meals. Emerald Park and Soos Creek elementary schools also qualify to offer meals at no cost under House Bill (HB) 1238. This ensures students at these schools have access to nutritious meals and remove financial barriers that may prevent them from receiving proper nourishment during the school day. Athletes of the Week: Kent's High School Cheer Teams

KSD is partnering with The Kent Reporter to highlight athletes from our high schools. Each week two athletes from different high schools will be featured as The Kent Reporter's Athletes of the Week. Congratulations to the cheer teams of Kent-Meridian, Kentlake, Kentridge and Kentwood high schools for being the first athletes of the week. Unlike other sports that are seasonal, cheer is a year-round sport. Read the full article here.

KSD Staff Spotlight

Coach Michael Christiansen

Serving Aces Both On and Off the Court

For the past 17 years, the Kent-Meridian Volleyball (KMVB) program has been under the leadership of Michael "Mike" Christiansen. Before he arrived in 2006, the program had experienced two coaches in two years, with Mike being the third. Aside from building the program, his main goal was to create a growth mindset in his student-athletes. Since being under his positive leadership, the program has experienced great success. KMVB has had multiple winning seasons, made numerous appearances at post-season tournaments, and returned to the Washington State tournament in 2011. According to Mike, though, the greatest success is what his student-athletes accomplish off the court. "I like seeing how the kids succeed and what they do after high school and all the great things they get to accomplish." Many of his student-athletes have gone to college, graduated, and are currently flourishing within their careers. They have also returned and coached alongside him, giving back to the program that once played an integral part in their adolescent years. Mike's coaching philosophy is simple: "developing the whole person to be successful for their future, both as an athlete and as a person." Thank you, Mike, for your dedication and commitment to seeing your student-athletes succeed on and off the court.

Mike has also coached track & field and taught at Kent-Meridian High School for the past 17 years. He is currently the head track & field coach and teaches social studies at the Kent-Meridian Technology Academy.

2023 Levies

Levies Benefit All Students

Like a subscription, local school levies must be renewed. Failure of either of these levies would mean significant reductions in staff and services that meet the needs of our students, including teaching and paraeducator positions, and our 1:1 student learning technology (laptops & tablets) program along with critical repairs and improvements. Remember to vote November 7.
