Mysterious African insects are infesting Portuguese olive groves

Unexplained damage to olive trees over a six-year period in Portugal has been confirmed as the effects of an obscure insect never before observed in Europe.

 

Concerningly, insecticides have had limited effectiveness and a lack of knowledge about the pest means control measures are yet to be developed.

NSW: Agtech grants available

The NSW Government has launched the $20 million Farms of the Future grants program, providing up to $35,000 to eligible farm businesses to purchase the latest Agtech equipment and connectivity solutions to address their farm needs. 

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • have a primary production enterprise in any agricultural industry with an active ABN and turnover of at least $40,000 per annum;
  • operate the primary production enterprise as a sole trader, partnership, trust or private company, or a combination of these structures;
  • have completed the Farms of the Future Training Program “Monitoring your farm with Agtech”, in-person or online and received a Certificate of Completion *multiple training dates and locations available from Feb-June*
  • operate the primary production enterprise in an eligible local government area: Armidale, Ballina, Byron, Cabonne, Carrathool, Griffith, Leeton, Lismore, Moree Plains, Narrabri, Orange.

Applications open for Chair of the NFF Horticulture Council

The NFF Horticulture Council is currently recruiting its next chair. The Council is the pre-eminent forum for deliberating and forming policy concerning our national horticulture industry. It was established in 2019 and is now comprised of over 20 national community and state peak horticulture bodies, who together represent the full breadth of an incredibly diverse industry. 

Applications are encouraged from those with experience as a chair or leader and in engaging in public policy development and debate. Also essential for success is an affinity with the Australian agriculture and horticulture industries and a strong motivation to advance the NFF’s interests.

The Churchill Fellowship application round for 2023 opens in March, offering Australians from all walks of life the opportunity of funded travel overseas to investigate a topic or issue of their choice. Churchill Fellowships open doors so recipients can meet with leaders in their field of endeavour, observe, learn and then bring their new-found knowledge home to share with their industries and communities.

Up to three Hort Innovation Churchill Fellowships are on offer this year, and the second of two free online information sessions is being held next week February to inspire and inform potential applicants:

Spanish olive oil sales increase in China

 

In the 2021 – 2022 campaign, Spanish olive oil significantly increased sales in China. Spanish olive oil ended the year with Chinese sales up 10.25 percent, with a total of 45,840 tons sold. In addition to the increase in sales, prices also rose. They saw an increase of 48.08 percent, reaching €177 million.
