This week

Looking out of the windows of the library all I can see is spring! So exciting. One of my favourite times of the year simply because it means summer is on its way and we are finally escaping the cold of winter. My drive down Duthy Street this morning was gorgeous with all the blossoms.

We have a loaded eNewsletter this week, starting with a new Check This Out series. Scroll up to meet Jo from Dymocks Hyde Park as she runs through a enticing list of books for Dad on Fathers' Day (Sunday 6 September). We have some more videos with the fantastic Jo all lined up, so keep an eye out for more.

Have you ever picked up a book and wondered if you've already borrowed it before? I know I've been halfway through reading a novel, and stopped to think, this seems awfully familiar, only to realise that, yes, I have read this before. D'oh! The Libraries SA OneCard network has just released a new feature, which can list the items you have previously borrowed. However, it doesn't happen automatically, you have to opt-in. You can either scroll down and download the guide or ask at the Libraries and we can help you. This is a facility we have had many requests for over the years and now it is at your fingertips.

There is a colouring-in competition for Be Kind to Animals Week and a Scribble Monster craft with our Storytime that looks absolutely fantastic. If you scroll right to the bottom of this eNewsletter, you can discover how to subscribe to the Unley Life magazine or apply for a community grant.

Of course, you could always drop in to Goodwood Library for a game of Scrabble next Monday. I used to be pretty good at the game. Might have something to do with an aunt of mine who use to play competitively. I swear board games are in a revival... probably because they are so much fun!

I hope you're enjoying this flash of warm weather and I'll see you in the Libraries.

Return to the world of the Hunger Games

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a prequel book to The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. It's the prequel to the 2008 bestseller The Hunger Games, centering on the events that occurred 64 years prior to the trilogy.

Fraught with teenage love and plenty of violence – everything you’d expect of Suzanne Collins is here in the backstory of the ruthless President Snow.

Suzanne Collins’s bestselling dystopian Hunger Games trilogy is set in a future America, Panem, whose capital city Capitol extorts a terrible annual tribute from the 12 Districts it rules. Adolescents are chosen to fight each other to the death in a televised competition. Only one survives. In this sleek, well-constructed prequel, we delve into the early years of this grim contest. Fans will remember Coriolanus Snow as the psychotic president of Panem; here we discover his backstory in a novel that discusses the corrupting influence of the societies into which Collins’s characters are born. Nature, nurture, or both?
