THE DEL AMO LAW BULLETIN
Volume 1 Issue 2 November 15, 2020
Get to Know Us: Mirka del Amo
Mirka del Amo is a Panamanian born American citizen, the wife of Carlos del Amo and the mother of Karina and Steven del Amo. All four work at Delamolaw.
Mirka started working at Delamolaw 25 years ago, handling administration and bookkeeping, and has progressed to be an excellent paralegal working in the areas of personal injury and real estate closings. She also has an active Real Estate License.
On February 2, 2020, she was diagnosed with stage IV Mantle Cell Lymphoma Cancer.
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a cancer of the lymphoid cells. MCL is aggressive and rare, accounting for about 2%-10% of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. There are four stages of mantle cell lymphoma. Stage IV (advanced-stage) is when the cancer cells have gone into masses, often replacing lymph nodes and have spread into other body organs.
MCL has a poor prognosis, even with appropriate therapy. Usually, physicians note treatment failures in less than 18 months, and the median survival time of individuals with MCL is about two to five years. The 10-year survival rate is only about 5%-10%. However, some researchers claim to have doubled the median survival rate in younger patients (less than 65 years of age) treated with an intensive chemotherapy regimen.
However, Mirka is a woman of faith. Immediately upon being informed of her condition, she set up a chat group called "Make It Count," The purpose of the chat was to ask God to use her condition to count in the lives of others and to seek prayers of healing. She lived with the biblical command found in Romans 12:12 (NLT) "Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble and keep on praying". From the beginning, she refused to look at the negative and trusted in God to work a miracle.
Mirka knows God has a purpose for everything and that his plan is perfect. She felt God was walking with her throughout the process and guiding her and her husband to choose the right doctors and the doctors to give her the right treatment on God’s schedule.
Mirka's urgent treatment was delayed until April due to the Coronavirus pandemic. She endured twenty-four chemotherapy treatments in six months, two bone marrow aspirations, six colonoscopies, two endoscopies, two pet scans, innumerable lab work, three emergency visits to the hospital, four blood transfusions, seven platelets transfusions.
Mirka endured tremendous pain while having the second bone marrow aspiration, and for the first time since she was diagnosed, she asked, "Lord, why do I have to go through this" to which God answered, "Don't forget that I died on the cross for you to save you and to give you eternal life. She immediately asked the Lord for forgiveness because she was reminded that the pain she endured was little compared to what the Lord endured at the cross for her. Confirmation from God came when she read in a devotional, "Don't try to understand what is happening, simply trust in me. Seven days later, she got the news. Modern science cannot detect one cancerous mantle cell in her body. She is in complete remission. A miracle, prayers were answered.
However, the miracle is much more than complete remission. God has used what the enemy meant for evil to do good. She has witnessed her, her husband, and her family's faith in God grow by leaps and bounds as the ordeal strengthens their unity, love, and compassion. She has changed people's despair into hope with her boundless optimism and loving concern for others. She was a joyful, optimistic, loving person before the diagnosis, after the diagnosis, through the treatment, and after remission. Most of all, she has learned to look at life as a precious gift from God, live optimistically, and value each moment of her life. She looks forward to living life to the fullest and serving God.
Her positive attitude has been life-changing to many people.

"Every procedure she has done trusting God with a smile"

Elections

During times of COVID, as citizens we saw a difficulty to go out and vote knowing we wanted to live the experience, yet maintain our health and safety a priority. Many maintain their ways of going out to vote physically and others decided to vote from home sending their ballots via mail. Some important statistics to take into consideration this 2020 General Election is there was a total of 101,423,318 early votes, 35,935,583 in-person votes, 65,487,735 mail ballots that were returned and 26,611,661 mail ballots outstanding. Millions of people voted and had their voice hear which is extremely important for our democracy. There was an enormous upgrade in numbers of voters this election which is extraordinary.

Thanksgiving in times of Covid

As a community who is family oriented and values these times a year, we plan to celebrate Thanksgiving to give us a sense of normal life. Now, we do have to remember we are still living in difficult times due to COVID and how this virus is going to be affecting the way we celebrate Thanksgiving. Don’t panic, we still will be able to enjoy and stay safe. Let’s take these tips on how we can celebrate while reducing the spread of COVID keeping us all safe.
  • Consider a small gathering of family and friends.
  • Limit the number of attendees as much as possible to allow people from different households to remain at least 6 feet apart at all times. Guests should avoid direct contact, including handshakes and hugs, with others not from their household.
  • Host outdoor rather than indoor gatherings as much as possible. Even outdoors, require guests to wear masks when not eating or drinking.
  • Encourage attendees to wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Clean and disinfect commonly touched areas.
  • Encourage guests to bring food and drinks for themselves and for members of their own household only; avoid potluck-style gatherings.
  • Plan ahead and ask guests to avoid contact with people outside of their households for 14 days before the gathering.
  • Have guest take test the day before the event to make sure everyone in gathering is safe.
Remember at the end of the day the importance is to spend time together and express how grateful to be together in times like these. Sending you and yours warm wishes, Happy Thanksgiving! May this day be a beautiful reminder of all the wonderful things in life.
